Show you care: 6 incredible causes to support

Check these out, too...

  • 25 fantastic things to do on MLK Day
  • 1D makes their own music vid--and it's adorable
  • Give back the green way
  • The easiest way to give back? A philanthroparty!
  • Want to help Oklahoma City? Here's how
Everybody wants to save the world, but which part is gonna be your damsel in distress? If you’re itchin’ to hold a bake sale, a yard sale or wanna make some crafts to sell for charity, here are six good causes that you can support. So see which non-profit sparks your interest and matches your giving style!

Keep History Alive

If you’re a history buff, then the Civil War Trust is your charity. The group is dedicated to protecting the battlefields of the Civil War, and it also works to educate visitors about the importance of that moment in U.S. history. Currently, only about 20 percent of the war’s battlefields are preserved, and more than 32,000 acres of that is thanks to the Civil War Trust. The organization has created apps and plain old maps that guide visitors through those historical sites, and it even helps to keep the areas clean so that tourists can have the best experiences possible.

Go Wild

Love trips to the zoo, volunteering at shelters and your own furry housemates? Then you’ve gotta check out the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The organization works to save endangered species and habitats, and it helps communities to work with nature instead of against it. WWF supports all kinds of critters, from African elephants to spectacled bears to marine turtles. It is also dedicated to helping large companies reduce their negative impact on the environment, so that decades from now, there will still be plenty of natural places, like the Congo Basin and the Chihuahuan Desert, for people to enjoy.

Let’s Play!

Wanna share your love of athletics? Then support Grassroot Soccer, an organization dedicated to stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS in Africa. To do that, the group has come up with an educational program for 12 to 18-year-olds that revolves around soccer, using the skills from the game as rules for living a healthy, goal-oriented life. It even brings pro soccer players to places like Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa to talk to kids about how to stay safe and healthy.

Save Lives

You love taking care of people, and seeing someone hurting is just too much to bear. So help save lives with Direct Relief International, a non-profit that provides medicine and health care to poor people, people affected by natural disasters, and people in war-torn areas. The organization mainly supports programs for mothers and their children, areas suffering from disease, and emergency relief. It doesn’t just help Americans, either – medicine is sent to places all over the world, like Haiti, Japan and Bolivia.

Share Knowledge

In science class, you’re totally fascinated by what your teacher has to say, and the idea of coming up with new technology to help people gets you super psyched. Well, check out the Society for Science & the Public to see how it’s spreading a love for science all over the country. Since the 1920s, the group has reported the latest scientific discoveries in the form of a magazine, which has shown up in schools, libraries and houses across the states. The society also sponsors scholarships and science fair programs for guys and gals like you who are already comin’ up with awesome new ideas before they’re even outta school.

Stars And Stripes Forever

You love showin’ people that this land is your land, and you’re all about the red, white, and blue. So help say thanks to the people that protect the old US of A by supporting Hope For the Warriors, an organization that provides all kinds of programs for post-9/11 servicemen and their families. The non-profit holds counseling retreats, gives out scholarships, organizes athletic events, and provides financial aid for those who have been wounded, mentally or physically, in the line of duty. It also helps active servicemen, veterans, and families of the fallen, so that they know how much we appreciate their contribution to this country.

So girlies, what are some of your fave charities to donate to?

Mod! Mod! Mod!
I really need some short hairstyles. I wore my hair the same way almost everyday last year. I wanna change things up you know. I'm an African American and I have Emma Watson length hair ( aka short). Any tips on how to make it grow or some cute hairstyles I can try? Thank you!

Hey saysay65, the best person for you to look at is Rihanna. She was very versatile with her short hair. You can always get your hair finger waved, curled, or gelled down. Accessories like hats and clips would give your hair a new look too. Hope this helps! Xoxo

I still haven't gotten my newest issue of GL (the one with Bridgit Mendler on the cover). Should I be worried or is it just taking a while for it to mail?

Hey Twiggi828, it could just be taking a while to be shipped, but it should've came by now. If you don't get it by this week, send a message to brittany@girlslife.com and she may be able to help you. Sorry about that! Xoxo

I love Heifer International, ASPCA, the Christian Fund, and pretty much any organization that helps animals or people in desperate need in very poor and often war-torn countries. My heart breaks for them.

Mod!!!
Does anyone know if apple cider vinegar is bad or
Good for you? Cause i really need to loose weight fast.
How?

Hey girlie, apple cider vinegar is good for a lot of things, but there's no real evidence that it will help you lose weight. You don't want to try any crash diets or anything crazy to lose weight anyway. If there were a quick weight loss trick that worked, everyone would be thin. So you'll have to do it the old fashioned way. Make sure that you're drinking your 8 glasses of water each day. Water helps flush toxins out of your body and is great for your skin. Find some time to exercise each day. Even if you just do a 30 min yoga or pilates video you can find online for free, it'll be a great way to burn some calories. And lastly, keep a log of what you're eating. It'll help you be conscious of what you're putting in your mouth, keep you accountable and show you where you're consuming too many calories.

MY doctor recommended that I see a therapist and so my mom and I talked about doing it. but she hasn't scheduled anything and I really need to see one. I CAN'T say anything. I've tried but my brain doesn't let me. Help please!

Hey girlie, unless you say something or make the appointment yourself, you don't have many options. You're going to have to speak up to get your mom to make that appointment.

MOD!!
i really wanna be a counselor when i grow up. Is that a normal ambition? And im already planning where im going for college, its in japan. People think im absoulty crazy bc i watch shows like my strangee addiction.
P.S the guy who "trimmed" my bangs cut them WAAAAY too short! Any suggestions?

Hey girlie, it's totally normal to want to be a counselor when you grow up! And way to go looking at colleges already! It just shows that you're ambitious and know what you want. As far as your bangs, try pulling them back out of your face until they grow out and you think they start to look better.

Hey Sunny4132!

Your not ugly! If you are feeling down about your hair, ask your mom or someone who probably has expience with hair cutting. It would be easier for them because they can see what they are doing. Look on GL for some fun short hair ideas. One of my favorite things to do with mine is pet it in braids at night and have it come of wavy in the morning. Using curlers might also make the split ends less obvious. I'm sure your beautiful!

Mod Mod Mod!!!
Please answer this as soon as you can!!! My parents have been acting really weird - Friday we went out to eat and my mom said about three three worded sentences when my dad got there, said she would see us at home and just left in the middle of the meal. When we got home she was taking a bath and when she got out she shut her door and didn't even say goodnight. They barely even talked yesterday and when I went into their room yesterday all of their wedding pictures were down. Help!!!

Hey Sarah510, oh no I wonder what's going on. They may have had a really bad argument and didn't feel like talking or being around each other. I'm sure they'll be over it in a few days. If not, maybe you can sit both of them down and get them to talk about it. Hope everything gets better soon. Xoxo
