In
Skinny by Donna Cooner, Ever Davies weighs 302 pounds and desperately wishes to be “beautiful” like the girls who mercilessly tease her. But Ever’s life spiraled out of control when her mother died, and she just can’t seem to bounce back. Ever hates herself and, according to Skinny, everybody else does, too.
But there’s another voice Ever hears—her own, real voice. Ever is a gifted singer and dreams of landing a role in the school musical. But Skinny won’t let her audition—she hisses horrible insults every time Ever tries to muster up her courage.
Then, after a humiliating incident involving a broken chair (witnessed by pretty much the entire school), Ever makes the drastic decision to have a life-altering surgery called gastric bypass. She hopes it’ll help her lose what’s been weighing her down for so long. But she also knows she must confront Skinny, too.
To save her own life, Ever begins the slow, uphill battle towards change. But the struggles of losing weight are nothing compared to the evils of her shattered self-esteem.
Will losing the weight really make Ever happier? Or will Skinny continue to hold her back from landing the lead and finally fitting in?
