And then she learned that it was a joke. Classmates told her that her popular peers had orchestrated the nomination as a prank. Whitney was devastated. Thinking herself unworthy of such an honor as a legitimate nomination, she contemplated suicide, The Huffington Post reports.
That’s when the town stepped in. When word of the prank spread through the small Michigan community, residents refused to let Whitney be defeated by her school’s bullies. Business owners volunteered to dress Whitney in a stunning red gown, have her hair and nails done and take her out to dinner. Families packed the stands at the Homecoming game, where her name would be announced, so that all she would hear was applause.
Whitney did end up going to Homecoming. On a Facebook page created to support her and all teens being bullied, she wrote, “Going to Homecoming to show them that I’m not a joke. I’m a beautiful person and you shouldn’t mess with me!”

Awesome. AWESOME. I just want to give this gal a hug. And it's ten times as awesome that the town stepped in to help. It even makes me happy to see that there's some good left.

Those people who pulled the prank are sick people. They don't know how words can almost kill people. It said Rachel nearly killed herself because of the prank! And Rachel is a beautiful person to begin with and to tear her down like that is so demeaning. I am so happy she proved not only to herself but to everyone that she is not a toy someone can play with. This is an amazing article of courage. Rachel, you are a beautiful person and good for you that you stood up to your bullies.

I think this is an amazing step in the right direction to stop bullying; Whitney was incredibly brave to be able to go to the dance after that and her community must be full of amazing people who supported her like that.

This is so sad, how she got pranked. It reminds me of the movie Carrie, but not with a bad ending.
by bananaface13 on 9/25/2012 6:28:25 PM
I don't quite get y they bullied her and mostly how it says its because if her hair which looks ompletly Normal I've seen the weirdest died hair and doesn't everyone wear dark looked clothes? Whatever, the homecoming thing is super nice though
by Colie34720 on 9/25/2012 6:15:51 PM
That is such a sweet thing for the town to do for her! It's great to see this happening because it might inspire other people who are battling depression or contemplating thoughts of suicide to realize that even if you're in the darkest of times and you feel like you have no one there for you, you have a lot of people who love you for you and who would be devastated to see you gone.
by michipie205 on 9/25/2012 5:49:00 PM
The only thing that would make this better is if the people who pulled the prank apolgized. I'm sure the popular girls did it because of jealousy, maybe Whitney is really intelligent and they struggle with math, maybe her dyed hair looks better than theirs does. Maybe the popular boys did it for similar reasons. Who knows, she might shoot foul shots better than they can, or something.
by smileurastar on 9/25/2012 4:38:48 PM
That is the best thing ever. An entire town coming together to help a poor bullied girl! That is so amazing!
by turnonthemusic1 on 9/25/2012 4:16:22 PM
