Feminism. Nowadays, a lot of people think it’s unnecessary,
that one of its main goals—gender equality—has been accomplished, so what’s the
point of dragging out
that tired
movement again? And yet…
Women still earn less
than men do for equal work
Only 30 percent of
girls in the world are enrolled in secondary schools. In the next two years,
women will make up nearly two-thirds of the world’s illiterate adult
population.
Women hold less than
16 percent of top leadership positions in Fortune 500 countries and about 20
percent of the seats in the U.S. Congress
1 in 5 high school
girls has been abused by a date and more than half of all rapes of women happen
to girls younger than 18
Today, Oct. 11, has been established by the United Nations
to support the a resolution made last year: “To help galvanize worldwide
enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives providing an opportunity for them
to show leadership and reach their full potential.”
Three cheers for that!
Are you ready to join
the movement? Leave us a comment telling us why YOU think the International
Day of the Girl is a great idea, and what you’re going to do to make sure that
you, your friends and all the girls who come after you have equal opportunities
to real the world in the future.
