6 easy ways to better your beauty sleep

Check these out, too...

  • Get a pro pedi at home
  • Spring hair bling under $10
  • Get gorgeous spring date night makeup
Sometimes sleep can seem more like a reward for making it through a crazy day than an essential part of your…beauty routine? Listen up ladies, beauty sleep isn’t just a cute saying or an excuse to hide under the covers for a few more hours; it plays a huge part in feeling and looking your best. According to recent studies, other people can actually notice if you seem sleep deprived and find you less attractive. Here are six tips to help you hunnies out:

1. Start a habit
Allow yourself 8 hours of sleep per night, no more, no less. The laziness and grogginess you feel from lack of sleep actually occurs when you over-sleep too. Once you get into this routine, you’ll fall asleep much easier as your body becomes accustomed to a steady cycle.

2. Ditch the devices
Avoid bringing your laptop into bed with you--or your cell phone. Your bed should be a place to relax, not worry about checking e-mails, social media or squeezing in one last text. If your head is hittin’ the pillow with your cell in your hand, chances are you’ll stay awake much longer.

3. Nix the all-nighters
Feeling a sense of pride that you were up till the wee hours and are still walking the next day is a mistake many girls make. Sure, you may feel fine, but actually you’re less alert, more prone to accidents and you risk throwing off your entire sleep cycle. Eek!

4. Cut the cola consumption
Late night snacking is something we’re all guilty of every once in a while. But the sugar and caffeine you consume before bed prevents your digestive system from working properly and can leave you restless and unable to fall asleep. Another reason to kick the can.

5. Write it down
If your main issue with getting a good night’s sleep is too many thoughts rushing through your head, try keeping a journal at your bedside. Record your thoughts as they come to you instead of building up tension in your tired body.

6. Say it with us…Relax!
Try taking a hot shower before bed to relax your muscles and ease stress.  Use a lavender scented body wash—the soothing aroma is linked to starting that sense of sleepiness.

Help! I always get like 5-6 hours of sleep going to bed at 11:45-2:00 in the morning. Everyones focusing on how to fall asleep but I have no trouble with that!! I just can't go to bed!! I alway finish homework like 2 minutes before I go to bed. Thats the problem! I always go on youtube and the internet for like 3 hours then go to bed late because of homework. I've tried blocking the sites and everything but I always find a shotcut! Please help my addiction with interent and help me get 8 hours of sleep! I'm dying literally!!

Hey girl, if you don't need the internet to do your homework, awesome, just find a place where you don't have access to the internet.  Find a place in your house or the library away from any internet devices and get to work!  You can do it.  If you need internet to do your work, put yourself in a place where you don't want others to see you on Youtube (like the library).  Good luck!  If you're truly worried about your health, have a conversation with your parents and see if they can help you get back to a good sleep sched.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
So I have never been able to sleep very well. I could lay in bed for two hours and most of the time, I will wake up perfectly. I take ADHD meds at 11:30 and sometimes forget so I take it later. I know that sometimes has something to do with it. But even when I get it on time, I can't sleep. I don't know what to do. Sometimes I fall asleep at midnight and wake up at 2 or something and can't fall back asleep. When I sleep really well, I wake up even more tired than before. I also tell my friends I am really tired and then they say that they have it worse when they always tell me that they sleep a whole lot. I don't know what to do anymore!!!!

Hey girlie, make sure that you're not drinking any caffeine after school. Caffeine stays in your system so that even coffee or soda with dinner can keep you from sleeping. You might also want to try working out in the mornings. It'll make you tired at night so you'll sleep better.

This might make me sound a little weird but Im supposed to take these pills and its my first time taking pills ever and I'm kind of nervous. How do you swallow pills? Would it be bad if I crushed it then mixed it in water? If it would be what else can I do to make it go down smother?

Hey girl,

I think swallowing them would be better than crushing them...it can be a little scary to swallow pills at first, but you'll get the hang of it quickly! Try taking a huge sip of water or juice--you won't even notice the pill Smile

If I can't fall asleep, I like to picture the best scenario happening to me the next day at school and I usually just drift off!

I used to have the worst time falling asleep, but then I started to listen to clasical music on while I fell asleep or celtic, or even gregorian chanting. It really helps listening to Bach, Tchikovsky, and Paganini are the best to fall asleep to. Another thing is to stop thinking about all your problems, and picture yourself as a character in your favorite movie or tv show, it works really well.

For all the insomniacs:
Try to go to bed at least 1 hour before you want to fall asleep, and establish a bedtime ritual. Like now i wash my face, now i read a book because it tells your bodies that its time to sleep.

I just have a lot of problems getting to sleep. I either count to 100 in my head, starting over if I lose my place, or listen to this meditation app my mom got me that's intended to be used as an aid to get to sleep. I've also found that lullabies worked well when I was little, but now I prefer classical or instrumental Christmas music. I've tried a lot of tips similar to these, and they never worked for me. I don't know, maybe there's just something in my brain that makes me really weird this way.

I never take devices to bed with me or do homework right before bed either. But most nights I'm up, staring at my ceiling for hours, sometimes all the way till 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning. Is there something wrong with me?

Hey Girl, a lot of people have trouble falling asleep. You can always talk to your doctor about it, but calm yourself down before going to bed: take a warm shower, watch t.v., read a book...

MOD MOD MOD MOD!!!
I was just wondering, when i go to bed around 8:20PM every night and wake up a 5:45AM in the morning, would that be enough sleep for me? I'm 11 and my mom says that I need 11 to 13 hours of sleep every night. Do I really need that much?
Thanks!

Hey Chica, you may or may not need that much sleep. Adults need an average of 8 hours of sleep, but someone your age is still growing and needs a little more. Be carefull, though, toomuch sleep can make you drowsy all day.

At school I have two friends that I sit with during lunch, 7 friends that I hang out with before school, and 3 friends that I hang out with after school. The friends that I sit with during lunch don't like the friends that I hang out after school with and they don't like the friends that I hang out with before school. I try to be nice to all of them, but I'm kind of stuck in the middle. I've tried to get all of us to sit at the same table at lunch, but my after school friends have "their table" that they have been sitting at since sixth grade. What should I do???!!

Hey Girl, It's hard when your stuck in the middle. try not to choose sides. Maybe switch back and forth avery day who you sit with.

Okay, so I've been having a super hard time falling asleep lately. I thought it was because I didn't exercise every day and that seemed to be related to the nights I couldn't fall asleep but yesterday I played 4 hours of intense volleyball and I still couldn't fall asleep until 2 hours after I went to bed. I go to bed between 9:45 and 10:30 at the latest. I usually read in bed for like 20 mins and then turn the lights out. But lately I've just been having a super hard time. I even stretch before bed because my mom said that might help. But my mom also said I might just be at a teenager phase where my body doesn't fall asleep as easy. (btw I'm 14) Any other tips or is this the reason???????
Thanks so much GirlsLife!

Hey girl, it could be, but it's hard to say. Sometimes adrenaline can keep us up or excitement. Try doing something soothing before you go to bed: take a hot shower, etc. While in bed, one of the things most helpful for me is making up a story and building that until I go to sleep. Give it a go and see how far you get before you're out.

ok so two things:
1) I'm 11, and wake up at 7 am. when should i go to bed?
2) I kinda want to start wearing makeup. just blush and lip gloss. how do i ask my mom?

Hey girl, 1) I'd try 10 p.m. Aim to get 8-9 hours of sleep. 2) Tell her just that: why you want to and that you just want to wear light make-up (lip gloss and blush) and would love it if she helped you pick it out. She may be more receptive if you tell her you want her to be involved.

At school I only have 5 firends that I see that are really nice and I can talk to them about anything and they are always there for me. It's hard to make friends because none of the popular people will talk with me because they think I'm weird. All of the other girls just are not that friendly. What do I do?

Hey girl, embrace the five friends you have and just be friendly to the other people around you and inclusive. Treat them the way you wish they'd treat you and they may become a little more open.

So today this guy in my class asked me out in front of everyone and I told him no and said i had a bf but i dont. all the guys kept telling him to ask me and he was going to originally but i felt bad rejecting him in front of everyone. he got really upset and now i dont know what to do cause he wont talk to me. :/

Hey girl, I'd try apologizing to him. What he did was very gutsy, and he's probably really hurting. Lying about having a boyfriend was a little cruel. Let him know you never meant to embarrass him and ask if there's any way you can make it up to him or make him feel a bit better. Put yourself in his shoes and ask yourself how you'd want to be treated.
