Peak viewing according to the experts will be around 3 a.m.
in the eastern U.S. and Canada. Why this time? Because that’s when the Earth is
due to come closest to the orbit of Tempel-Tuttle comet. What you’ll see is the
debris from the tail of the comet, which we encounter once every 33 years.
Scientists expect about a dozen shooting stars will be
visible per hour tonight. To have a good shot at seeming them, you want to be
as far away as possible from light pollution, so visit a friend who lives in
the country, if you can. Bring along a lawn chair or a sleeping bag, park it on
the ground and gaze up at the sky. Be sure to bundle up! It’s chilly out there!
Tell us, babes: Are
you gonna be wishing on shooting stars tonight?
