Wish upon a shooting star tonight!

Better start brainstorming a good wish, babes, ‘cause tonight’s your chance to send ‘em out into the universe. From sunset tonight through dawn tomorrow (that’s dusk on Nov. 16 through sunrise Nov. 17), the Leonid meteor shower will be visible across North America.

Peak viewing according to the experts will be around 3 a.m. in the eastern U.S. and Canada. Why this time? Because that’s when the Earth is due to come closest to the orbit of Tempel-Tuttle comet. What you’ll see is the debris from the tail of the comet, which we encounter once every 33 years.

Scientists expect about a dozen shooting stars will be visible per hour tonight. To have a good shot at seeming them, you want to be as far away as possible from light pollution, so visit a friend who lives in the country, if you can. Bring along a lawn chair or a sleeping bag, park it on the ground and gaze up at the sky. Be sure to bundle up! It’s chilly out there!
