My dad's unemployed--and wants to hang out 24/7

 
My dad lost his job a while ago. At first, it was nice to have him home, but he’s home A LOT. We get along and everything, but I think he wishes I’d spend more time with him than I do.

 

Dear Stay-at-Home Dad,

I bet your dad wishes her were busier—and getting regular paychecks again. I know this situation is hard on you, but it’s helpful to remember that it’s hard on him, too. You can always say, “Dad, let’s talk later, I have to plow through my homework now,” or, “Dad, when Julia leaves, will you have time to run an errand with me?” In other words, make it gently clear when you are not available.

 

Also, think about what you like to do with your dad. Cook? Run? Watch movies? Shoot hoops? Try to spend your time together in a way that works for you. Finally, there’s no crime in hanging out at friends’ homes now and again.

Dear gumcard, if you are very careful with your grades and do your homework one time and study for up coming tests then you have nothing to worry about. If this is not you, then you might. If your having trouble with a subject in particular, then reaching out to the teacher after school or during a lunch break would be a good idea or asking some friends for help. You may also want to discuss the possibility of getting a tutor with your parents. If you are just worried about an assignment and this has happened before , explore different options that may allow you to see your grades online. if this is more of a social problem then I would suggest being yourself around people and using the old "how was your vacation" question as a conversation starter. I don't know why, but every time I start thinking about vacation ending and going back to school, I get unusually nervous. Sometimes I can't even go to sleep at night because thoughts keep me up. I've always been extra careful when it comes to my grades, but I'm scared that I might be slipping. Please help!! Thanks
