Why you sleep like the living dead

Check these out, too...

  • Fact or fiction: Sweet scents lead to sweet dreams
  • 10 moves to get ya moving in the a.m.
You know how it goes: You can’t get out of bed ‘til Mom drags you out. You fall asleep in homeroom. And pre-calc. And mid-sit-up in gym. If you don’t get a 3 p.m. nap in, you’re pretty sure things are gonna go south, stat. You can hardly keep your eyes open to finish your English essay. But come 2 a.m., you are wide awake, ready to take on the world.

Here’s the sitch:

The fact of the matter is that your internal clock is totally nutty when you’re a teen, which means it usually isn’t synced up with the sched Mom and Dad (and your school) say ya need to stick to. Why is that? Well, once puberty settles in, your body tends to release melatonin, a hormone which makes you sleepy, hours after it usually does so in adults. That’s why you spend hours wide-eyed when you should be catching zzz’s. And when ya wake up? According to the study, you lose sensitivity to a.m. light, meaning that the rays that peek through your curtains when your alarm goes off have about as good a chance of making you feel refreshed and ready to go as a cup of warm milk. Awesome, right?

And that’s not all…

Beyond that, falling asleep in the wee hours only to rejoin the land of the living a few hours later, though, is detrimental to your cognitive health, a recent study reports. Only 7.6 percent of teenagers regularly hit the hay for 9 to 10 hours, as recommended. More than one-third get six or fewer hours of sleep a night, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This sleep loss can hamper neuron growth during your teen years, and that’s when you rely on it most for SAT-acing brain power.

What can you do?

With bestie stress, homework and after-school activities, it’s tough to wind down early. But until schools start pushing back start times, it’s essential for your health—and believe it or not, the more solid sleep you get, the happier and more positive you’ll feel. During the day, avoid caffeine and bites loaded with sugar. Get in a workout that makes you sweat, whether it’s running around your neighborhood or dancing in your bedroom. If you’re feeling stressed out, listen to some calming music or try ten minutes of yoga when you get home from school. Leave your phone on the kitchen counter instead of your night table and power down electronics two hours before your head hits the pillow. Sleep well!

MOD MOD MOD Please please help me! I'm absolutely terrible at managing my time after school! It seems like the hours slip away and soon enough its 1am and I haven't even done half my homework! I don't like doing this but I always just let it happen! How can I fix this?? I have basketball from 6-8 and then I have to eat dinner when I get back so that occupies so much time. I get home at four and between then and basketball i usually just relax, but that's probably not a good idea. I do really well in school, but I'm not trying to my full potential - I don't do all my homework and hardly study! Plus I write on Wattpad (an ebook community thing) and I need to write so I can update on there! I have so much to do but so little time! I feel like I'm just not concentrating on my homework enough to get it done quickly - it takes me FOREVER! how can I fix this and manage my time so I can do everything and get to bed by 11ish?! Thank you so much!! Smile

hey chickie! you need to get your priorites in order first. school is most important, then what? write a list and complete all of your activities according to their importance. good luck!

xoxo

MOD MOD MOD
I think my body is trying to tell me something- sometimes I'm overly stressed for no reason even when I'm not doing anything and suddenly- POOF the blockage in my mind is free and I feel awesome. I'm just starting to go though puberty so I don't know if this is normal... Thanks a lot!!

Hey Girl, I think what you're going through is normal. Your stress could be due to hormones or you could be worried about something like school or friends. next time you feel this way take a deep breath and try to determine why you're all worked up.

Help my back is killing me and my refuses too take me anywhere. But I can't sleep! SO I wake up in the middle of the night unsure of what to doFrown(( it hurts so bad. I don't know, I just want it to go a way so I can have a normal life,

Hey Girl, your parents won't take you to a doctor? I don't know what kind of pain you're having, but Definitely put ice and heat on it, alternate 20 minutes each. Talk to them about some pain medicine. A warm bath might help too. Sorry I can't help you more.
