Just a few months ago, the world reeled following the Aurora movie theater shooting. And now, here we are again, shocked and horrified and unbelievably scared that it could happen to us, and, if we’re lucky, grateful that today, it wasn’t us.

This morning, a young man walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., after murdering his mother in her home, and proceeded to shoot and kill 26 other people, including 20 children, before killing himself.

What else can I say, girls, other than, “How could anyone do such a thing?” I have no answer for that, because I truly can’t imagine. But I know we need to talk about it—discuss our grief and our anger and our pain. And then, we need to start talking about change. What can we do for the families? For the victims? For the community of Sandy Hook and Newtown? For our own communities as they wonder if they’re next? And what can we do to ensure that something so terrible never, ever happens again?

I don’t have answers, darlings, but I do know that talking will help. Talk to your parents and siblings and friends and teachers. Speak honestly and openly. Don’t judge others for what they say, just listen and respond. Remember, everyone’s opinion is valid and deserves to be expressed, whether you agree with it or not.

If you’re having trouble dealing with your grief, please take a look at this post, and talk to a parent, counselor or trusted adult.

Love to you all,

Brittany @ GL, and the rest of the Girls’ Life staff

Tell me: How are you doing in light of this tragedy? Remember to be kind and respectful to each other, please.

Editor's note: Article updated on Dec. 17 to reflect updated information on the tragedy

I read that this man's brother said the gunman had been diagnosed with mental illnesses earlier, and that may have been why, though now nobody will know. It will be so much easier when it all stops. It all, just, stops.

I don't understand how such cruel, heartless, cold, people can do such a thing. I can only think of how this man could kill 10 children, and his mum! Ten children... ten little lives ruined. And for the 15 more people, their lives were cut unexpectedly short, by someone so heartless. I will be praying for the families of these children, men, and women who were killed. And I will be praying for the lives of the people who were injured during the shooting. Those people will never live their lives as if they had if the shooting never happened. They will always have the picture of a man, shooting their friends, acquaintances, and complete strangers, and they lived. I wish I could just send flowers and a 'Get Well Soon' or 'Sorry For Your Loss' card to the families of the children, men, and women who were either killed or injured, or even visit them. I feel horrible for them. And, why would he kill so many people if he was going to kill himself? I just don't get it. I am so sorry for them.
