You don't have to be a bookworm to adore this vintage-looking banner. Perfect for above your bed, bulletin board and beyond, we love that it's totally customizable...and seriously easy to pull off. Try making one for above your bedroom's door frame, to spread across the breakfast nook as a V-Day surprise for the fam or a mini one for your locker.

What you'll need:
A book you don't mind ripping apart
Scissors
String, ribbon, twine or yarn
Scissors
Markers

What you'll do:
1. Carefully tear out a bunch of pages from your discarded book as neatly as you can. The more you tear (and see your project come together), the less guilt you'll feel for ripping up the pages, we promise.

2. Start with the main part of your design, like a word you want to spell out. To spell out "DREAM," I used full-size paperback book pages and left the torn edges ragged. Use paint or a marker (I opted for a black marker, but anything will do) to carefully draw your chosen letters, shapes or symbols.

3. Now it's time to go crazy! Fold your book pages in half and start cutting out shapes. I created several different-sized hearts, then glued two together, spine to spine, to create a 3-D look for some of them. You can make anything you want, from snowflakes to simple circles.

4. Lay out your entire design on the floor. Then, grab a hot glue gun and your string of choice and, starting at one end, glue the design together. Place a few dots of glue on each piece of paper, then carefully smush the string into the glue. Be sure to watch out for your fingers! Consider the way your shapes will hang as you glue them to  the string; for some of my hearts, I wanted them to hang vertically, so I glued the string right up the center. For others and for my letters, I wanted them to hang horizontally, so I glued the string across the top of the page, from left to right.

5. Let it dry, then start hanging! Ask Mom or Dad for help (um, and permission, if you need to put holes in the wall).

i need snazzy ways to fab up my room walls for cheap? i like this idea (book garland) but are there any other diy ways to wake up my room and add a pop of color to my walls?

Hey girlie,

Book garland would be totally cute, or you could buy a couple of new posters! If you go to a decorating store like the Container Store or a big box store like Target or Walmart, they might have sticky designs like flowers or other wall art type things that you could put on your walls that won't cause damage.

Ok so our cheer banquet is next week and I really want to make the girls something special. Last year I made them all little bears that had bows on their heads and were wearing shirts that said "cheer 2011-2012" in glitter. I want to do something else creative like that for this year. There are 14 girls on the squad. Do you have any ideas on what I could make/get them? Thank you so much! Smile

Hey girlie,

Maybe you could make a craft that looks like a cheer megaphone? I'm sure they would love whatever you gave them, because it's the thought that counts! Have fun at your banquet!

My room is seriously so small. It is actually meant to be a medium sized office. I can only fit in my bed, nightstand, desk , and deresser in it so i can't really add lights and #D decoration to it because it wouldn't fit. What are ways i can spice up my room without taking up to much space?

Hey girl, some wall decorations could definitely help, or some snazzy string lights!
