Love lessons from One Direction

While you’re busy jumpin’ on your bed and singin’ into your hairbrush to the tunes of One Direction (or is that just us?), you might be missing a crash course in love. These selected songs can actually teach you a thing or two besides how to belt out your best imitation of Harry Styles—seriously. Want to be just as charming as the boy band we all adore? Read on for the biggest pointers.

“Little Things”

Love Lesson: Embrace the imperfections

Do you try to hide your smile ’cause your dimples drive you crazy? Well they’re driving him crazy, too—in a totally different way. It’s your little quirks like the “crinkles by your eyes” or the “freckles on your cheeks” that a guy finds irresistible. In this tune, the boys of 1D urge you ladies to love your imperfections. Never let them get you down—it’s what he loves most about you!

“I Would”

Love Lesson: Looks don’t mean everything

How your guy treats you is way more important than his looks. He may be a total hottie, but a bad BF, and it’s important to know there’s another guy out there who’s dying to treat you the way you deserve. Even though 1D sings, “I can’t compete with your boyfriend, he’s got 27 tattoos” they ask, “would he hold you if you were feeling low?” Well, we know these cuties would! Don’t let good looks distract you from a potentially terrible ’tude or dude. It’s just that simple.

“One Thing”

Love Lesson: Being tongue-tied just may mean he likes you

Don’t get down if your guy isn’t the smooth talker you dreamed of or a constant complimenter. Even the boys of 1D admit, “I tried playing it cool, but when I’m looking at you, I can’t ever be brave ’cause you make my heart race.” Some guys get totally nervous around girls and (shocker!) they may even say the wrong thing. Confused if he’s crushing because he said something awkward or can’t even say exactly what it is about you he likes? It may just be because he doesn’t, “know what it is but [he needs] that one thing,” and, well, “you’ve got that one thing.”

“What Makes You Beautiful”

Love Lesson: Being yourself is cute

The boys make it clear here: “Being the way that you are is enough.” The most attractive quality about a girl, to most guys, is when she can just be herself. You may not realize it, and feel pressured to try to impress a guy by acting like someone else for his attention. But “everyone else in the room can see it… everyone else but you”…being true to yourself is all you need to chat up the cutie you have your eye on.

“She’s Not Afraid”

Love Lesson: Forget the past

Just because you’ve had a bad breakup or a nightmare for an ex doesn’t mean all guys are that way. Don’t freak about future relationships because you had one bad experience. The boys sing, “’Cause every time I tell her how I feel, she says it's not real. Or maybe all her friends have told her don't get close or he'll just break your heart.” You can’t know for sure until you’re willing to try again.

“Live While We’re Young”

Love Lesson: Be spontaneous

Spontaneity is the spice to keeping every relationship fresh and fun. You’ve been going to the same restaurant for the past three months? Try a new hotspot for a date. He’s always wanted to take you to the skate park but you’ve been afraid to go because you’re secretly a klutz? Finally agree to do it. Stepping out of your comfort zone a li’l bit might do wonders.  As the boys say, you should “go crazy, crazy, crazy ’til we see the sun.” So try something new, already—just don’t actually skip out on curfew.
