Nicholas Hoult talks Warm Bodies

What would “life” be like as a zombie? Well, Nicholas Hoult knows. The Brit cutie (yes, Jennifer Lawrence’s ex) is taking on the big screen as R in Warm Bodies, hitting theaters today.

After a zombie apocalypse, R, who is not like many of his fellow undead, encounters Julie (Teresa Palmer), one of the very few human survivors, and tries saving her from a zombie attack. The pair’s unlikely romance sets off a series of events that not only transforms R, but also other zombies. And since the flick is told from R’s comedic point of view, hearing his thoughts and outlook on every situation is bound to bring the laughs.

We caught up with Nicholas and had him spill all on this hot new teen romance, based on the Isaac Marion novel by the same name. Read on to find out what he had to say about grunting, the undead and whether or not he’s a rom-com kinda guy.

GL: Why should we check out Warm Bodies?

Nicholas: It’s got horror, romance, and it’s also funny. It’s a great date movie because it’s one both guys and girls can enjoy.

R, like all of the other zombies in this film, mainly communicates via grunting. Was it fun playing someone like that?

It was lots of fun, especially because I didn’t have a lot of dialogue to remember. I got so used to not talking, I panicked on set once, though. I went up to Teresa [Palmer] one day and asked if she could run through my lines. She started laughing at me because she had pages of dialogue and I was [freaking] over like three lines.

This movie is based on a novel. Are there any other books about the supernatural you’d recommend?

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s got a magical element and a romantic turn, told from magicians who have intertwined their faith with each other.

A zombie, a vampire, or a werewolf. If you could pick, which would you want to be?

I think from our point of view, they obviously all have their downfalls. The whole drinking human blood thing, that’s a bit tricky. I might go werewolf. It would be fun to run on all fours.

We all know Warm Bodies is a romantic comedy. Are there any other rom-coms you secretly love?

I don’t hate to admit, I love romantic comedies. I always go back to the Bridget Jones films. I don’t watch them on my own or with my guy mates, because that would be a little bit weird, but I know girls who like those films.

If there was one thing you wanted to do before you die, what would it be?

I mean this isn’t something that you can really do, but I’d like to be able to fly in a group of birds. Or maybe cage dive with white sharks. It’s kind of just a different world to be in.

Be sure to catch Warm Bodies (in theaters now). Then come back and share your thoughts.
