Why you need to stop multitasking right now

Check these out, too...

  • What to do when your parents are worried about something big
  • 10 tips for acing your AP tests
  • 5 last-minute ways to lift your grades
  • 3 signs you need to give your study group the boot
  • How not to pull an all-nighter (and stay sane if you have to)
There are 24 hours in a day, and that sounds like a lot until you start to break it down. About 8 of those hours are spent sleeping, 7 are spent in school and then you’ve gotta do your homework, study, go to sports practice and attend all your club meetings. Not to mention somewhere in there you’ve gotta find time to eat, get to all these places and find a social life. You can’t diss your friends (um, or your fam) after all! Your solution? Multitasking, trying to get more than one thing done at the same time.

However, a recent study at the University of Utah reports that multitasking is actually really ineffective. In this study, undergraduate students were asked to rate their ability to multitask on a scale of 0 to 100. Then, they had to memorize a sequence of letters and mathematical equations while researchers evaluated each student’s impulsiveness, questioned if the students use their phones while driving and how much time they spend on social media like Facebook. The results were interesting in that, when they were graphed, they had a downward slope. This means that those who multitasked scored worse than those who didn’t.

“The people who multitask the most tend to be impulsive, sensation-seeking, overconfident of their multitasking abilities, and they tend to be less capable of multitasking,” said researcher David Strayer. These results imply that those who multitask have trouble concentrating rather than just a special talent of doing more than one thing at a time. The result? They aren’t able to remember as much information. So next time you’re trying to study, put down your phone and turn off the TV. Hello, easy A!

I feel (know) I'm overweight. I don't have that much room or time to excersie, excpect for PE in school. I've tried eating less, but I feel like nothing has helped! Can you please help me??

Hey girlie,

Has your doctor told you that you are overweight? If you're not sure, you should ask next time you're there. If you are, the doc can help you develop an eating and exercise plan that will work with your schedule and get you where you need to be. If you don't know that you're overweight, focus more on living a healthy lifestyle than on losing weight, because a healthy weight is different for everyone! You can do workouts in your own home or after school, or try getting your family or a friend to be your workout buddy. Check out our workout page for tons of ideas to get you started! http://www.girlslife.com/category/workouts.aspx

MOD! MOD! MOD! What is a solution to get rid of a muffin top?

Hey girlie, cardio is always a good start. Any exercises that work your obliques, like bicycle crunches will help too.

I just received an email saying the moderators approved my profile, but when I click on "what does everyone else see," it still says, "this profile is not publicly visible." I made sure the box that said "keep my profile private" was unchecked. Am I doing something wrong?

Hey girlie, make sure and save it one more time. Then it might take some time to show up publicly so it give it a couple days and see if it's still a problem.

MOD MOD MOD!!!!!
I'm have a really bad habit of procrastinating. I always tend to wait till 9 PM to do my homework! I know that's really bad, but its usually because I get distracted by my phone and other electronics. I need the devices for homework sometimes, but I always get distracted because of Instagram and texts! What should I do???? PLEASE HELP ME!

Hey girlie, you probably don't need your phone to do homework so put that away until you're finished. Getting your phone back can be your reward and motivation to finish. If you need Internet, use a computer and get a small calculator if you're using your phone as one.

So I found out the guy I like has a gf or they just broke up, I don't know. I was going to say to him tomorrow "hey bieber fever" to start a convo. He looks like Justin Bieber. Should I even bother starting a convo now since he might have a gf? I would feel guilty flirting with a taken guy.

Hey girlie, even if he does have a gf it doesn't hurt to get to know him better. You can be friends or maybe more when he's ready for that. Don't think of it as flirting, just be friendly.

I am learning this, when I multi-task it seems I make more mistakes in my homework. So I am trying to work on one thing at a time. Maybe my mom was right and my friends are wrong because people who think they are great multitaskers really arent good as they think.

@angelst.me, 1st off, write down encouaging words(such as I'm talented, There's always tomorrow ect.) on a piece of paper and stick them places you see often. Next, try getting a shampoo and/ or conditioner that works better for you/ your hair and makes it not so dead. As for your hair length, it will grow out. Don't worry! As for your skin, get a face wash and/or makeup that works for your skin and makes you feel like the beautiful girl that you are. Something else that you could do is to talk to a friend and of she's a true blue friend, she'll give you words of encouragement that are true and specific to you. If those words are from someone close, they'll mean more. Good luck and remember that you are beautiful!

If I'm dressing up as Cher Lloyd, what kinds of rings and earrings should I wear? Like what styles? Thanks!

Hey girlie, wear some chunky gold rings (the bigger, the better) and dangly earrings. In her videos she always has lots of big jewelry on!

MOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!MOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont know what to do!? I dont like anything about my self! it is REALLY getting to me lately! I have alot of things going on as is! My hair is dead and an ackward length ( one inch below my shoulders) I have really bad skin (black heads)....Got any advice?! btw i have tried the write down the things you like about yourself thing and it is not really working anymore! PLZ help!!!!!!!!!!!! xoxo

Hey girlie, think positive thoughts! You can see a dermatologist or just use more skin products to make your skin better and get a hair cut. Find things that you like about yourself and make sure you to something everyday to remind yourself of that. I know it's hard to be positive when you're feeling down, but your attitude really does make all the difference and soon you'll start to believe it!
