Let’s face it: when it comes to braiding, the
possibilities are endless. This is one trend that only ever inspires creativity
– which is probably why it never seems to disappear. From elegant updos to more
casual looks, braided hairstyles continue to make the rounds on both the red
carpet and the streets of town. Check out how the celebs have been rocking this
timeless technique recently, and get ready to pick up some tips on how to make
these styles your own.
The windswept side braid
Sweet and simple, Whitney Port’s artfully
messy braid adds a relaxed air to her otherwise formal gown.
How-to: Coat hair lightly with texturizing spray. Part hair on the side, braid
hair normally, then gently pull at a few of the pieces in the finished plait to
leave it feeling loose. Tie off the end with a pretty ribbon elastic for a fun
take on this look.

The tiara braid
You’ll feel just like a princess with this
elegant ’do! Take a page from Taylor Swift’s book and bobby pin a bitty braid
into a crown. With a few wisps left framing the face, this romantic look is
consistently flattering.
Tip: This look usually works best with
long-to-medium length hair. Create a center part; then, pulling out a 2-inch
section, begin a small braid at ear level. Wind the braid over your head and
secure everything with a couple bobby pins. Pull back the rest of your hair
into a low bun and secure with more bobbies. A few spritzes of hairspray
probably wouldn’t hurt, either.

The herringbone crown
Regular braided crowns not difficult enough
for you? Try your hand at Diana Agron’s delightfully intricate-looking fishtail
‘do. This sophisticated style is sure to add an air of elegance to any outfit.
Use natural-colored bobby pins to secure everything, and this look will come
across as seamless.
Tip: Separate out about a three-inch band of
hair along your hairline. Starting from one ear, fishtail-braid this section of
your hair, then fasten it in place by your other ear with a bobby pin. Scoop
everything else up in to a simple, low chignon or leave it loose for a more
relaxed vibe.

The braid knot
Amanda Seyfried’s little topknot may not be
the flashiest braided look out there, but it gives her simple bun its
red-carpet upgrade nonetheless. So the next time you feel like just throwing
your hair into a casual bun, try braiding it first to get a fashion-forward
look with minimal extra effort.
Tip: For the simplified version: Pull your
hair into a high pony and secure. Then, braid the ponytail and wrap into a
twisted bun. Use bobby pins and plenty of hairspray to hold everything in
place.
