5 spring dance-worthy updos that won't take all day

Check these out, too...

  • Find the best bathing suit for your shape
  • Reminder: Our June/July Real Girl Winter Vinecki is answering your Qs tonight on Facebook!
  • Get gorgeous spring date night makeup
  • Dream on with a DIY dream board
  • Trends we heart: Americana
The big spring dance and prom season are right around the corner and we know you wanna look like the belle of the ball, natch. Not keen on dropping four hours and a couple Benjamins at the salon? We rounded up five updos that are all easy enough to DIY, no pros or endless appointments needed. Now that’s a big do!

The classic side chignon

For a do that is as classic as it is simple, try this easy chignon. Rachel Leigh Cook’s version is the perfect complement to any elegant look.

How-to: Create a side part and wrap hair into a bun on the opposite side of the part. Secure the bun with a ponytail holder and pins. Don’t worry about making it perfect, the imperfections are what gives it a little something extra.

Tip: Spray an extra strong hairspray all over to make sure your ’do lasts all night long.

The punky pony

The inner rock star in you might want to break away from the classic updo look and try something edgy. Kelly Osbourne’s sleek purple pony is the perfect combination of punk and posh. Even if you don’t want to go for lavender locks, this style would still look fab on any natural color.

How-to: First you’re going to want to make a deep side part. Tease the hair at the crown upwards and then gently smooth over so it lays flat. Pull the rest of your hair into a side pony and secure with an elastic.

Tip: To get Osbourne’s purple color without the commitment, try a bold hair chalk. We heart:

The braided bun

Looking for something a little more challenging? Lea Michele’s braided bun is perfect for the crafty girl. The braid near the hairline adds soft texture to an otherwise simple look.

How-to: Start by making a side part. Then grab a section of hair, about two inches wide, on the side of your head that has more hair. French braid that section, while making sure to keep the braid flat on the head as you go. Twist the hair around the back of your head and secure it with a few bobby pins. French braid a second section of hair behind the first braid so that the braids run parallel to each other. Pull the rest of your hair around into a low bun and secure with more pins.

Tip: Use an extra strong and durable bobby pin to make sure your hair doesn’t budge.

The messy bun

Want a look that takes less than three minutes? You found it. Jennifer Lawrence rocks this edgy version of an otherwise classic bun. This look is perfect for the girl who isn’t afraid to get a little messy.

How-to: Simply slick back the hair on the top of your head, then take the rest of your hair and wrap it around in a circle on the crown of your head. No need for bobby pins, just secure the bun with a couple ponytail holders that are placed directly over the bun.

Tip: Use your fingers to work in a bit of hair gel and tousle the pieces around your crown and hairline for awesome texture.

The twist-‘n’-shout updo

Featureflash / Shutterstock.com

Has there ever been a moment when Taylor Swift’s hair didn’t look amazing? She can rock it all: short, long, sleek, curly and everything in between. We love this low-key twisted style. It’s pretty and feminine and not too perfect, which is exactly why we heart it.

How-to: Start with wavy or curly hair. Use a wave iron and beach spray to nab textured waves if you don’t come by ‘em naturally. Loosely twist a 2-inch section at your hairline and pin in place, hiding the bobby. Repeat on the opposite side. Then twist the remaining hair into a bun and pin in place.

Tip: Add a little texture to your hair with a texturizing sea salt spray.

I really like this guy and we've been texting for almost a year now and we flirt a lot when we text. I really wanna ask him to my semi-formal in may but I don't wanna get turned down because then it would be awkward. I've asked my mom if I could ask him and she said that she thinks he would say yes. But he's a year older than me and I don't want him to feel like he has to go. We're friends and I dont know if I'm ready to become anything more than that. I would like to take it slow.

MOD MOD MOD!
so there's this Guy in my class, hunter, he's not the cutest but not the ugliest; and he's a little chubby, not that I'm complaining though. He's almost asked me to be his girlfriend a couple times now, but chickened out. He wrote a note and said he'd give UT.to me but he didn't. He set it on his desk and I snatched it. All I could read was "go out with me?" And I know it was for me. A lot of people would.make fun of ne if I dated him but I don't know. What do you think?

Hey girlie, don't worry about what other people think. But don't go out with him if you don't really like him. If you're not sure about him then it's not fair to him to make him think that you like him.

Do guys like when girls wear their hair down and natural, when they straighten it, curl it, Febch briad it, or do a lady gaga bow bun?

Hey girlie, guys like girls who come off as confident. So wear your hair however you feel most confident and guys will love it!

So we used to be friends, me and J, and he found I liked him and my feiend told him I didn't because he didn't like me but he told someone I was pretty. He denied to me and my friends that he liked me evn when he knew I liked him. So his best friend L told my best friend W that J likes W but my friend B said whenever her and W brought me up J would liten and one time dropped his books even, and when I walked by him he'd stop and look. What is his problem? Does he like me or not?

Hey girlie, boys can be weird about that kind of thing. I don't know what's going on with him, but it sounds like maybe you're better off without him. You deserve someone who wants to admit to everyone that they really like you.
