Burned out? 5 ways to get psyched for school again

School dragging ya down? Regain that first day freshness with these five bright ideas for giving your year a major reboot. Read on…

Get involved in something new

Looking forward to an activity you really, truly enjoy, like ultimate Frisbee practice after school or an a capella rehearsal during lunch, can make the hours spent doing stuff you really dislike fly by. Bonus? It’s a great way to reward yourself for a job well done.

Convo starter: “Hey, Sarah! I know there’s only a few months left in the school year, but do you think I could help with the lit mag? The last issue was so awesome!” or “Mr. McGee, do you think I could maybe join the lacrosse team for drills and just sit in on some practices? I really want to polish my game for next year.”

Balance your schedule

You don’t have to wait ‘til next year’s class sign-up to trim down your busy schedule. Write down every single commitment you have, from classes to extra credit projects to sports to clubs to babysitting gigs to chores. Highlight the ones you have to do (that includes geometry…) and consider pruning the ones that are proving to be too much to handle.

Convo starter: “Mr. McNally, I love Pottery Club, but I’ve just got too much going on on Tuesdays. Is it OK if I just come once a week?” or, “Mom, I know Wednesday is my night to make dinner, but my homework is out of control. Could I take Friday, instead?”

Learn how to say “no”

There’s no shame in refusing to sign on for a project or activity that’s gonna push you over the edge. Actually, even though it might be tough to disappoint now, you’ll be way better off tomorrow, next week and next month—trust us.

Convo starter: “Gee, Miss Reynolds, that sounds like a great opportunity, but my schedule is packed. My friend Sally is really interested in Shakespeare, though—do you want me to talk to her about it?” or “Wow, what a great idea for a club! I’m slammed with school right now, so I don’t think I have time to be a really ace treasurer, but let me know if you need volunteers.”

…and how to ask for help

Your teachers keep piling on the homework, and you’re not sure if you’re ever gonna catch up. Instead of fretting about the stuff you just can’t get to, try coming clean ASAP—and asking for a little assistance.

Convo starter: “Ms. Meyers, I know that problem set for chapter 12 was due today, but I just don’t even know where to begin. Could we maybe meet during a free period or after school to go over the lesson?” or, “Mom, I’m really having a hard time in chem. Do you think I could get a tutor to help with the tougher topics?”

Keep your school friends at school

There’s something awesome about walking down the hallway and being tackled by your besties because they’re so psyched to see you again. Get that feeling every day by putting your 24/7 texts to them on hold and chatting them up before the bell rings, instead.

Convo starter: “Sorry, chica! Mom wants me to watch Smash with her tonight—but I wanna hear all about your date tomorrow a.m. Get ready to spill!” or, “I think I’m actually getting how to do this! Let’s compare answers during lunch tomorrow.”
