Embarrassing yourself in front of your crush is every girl’s
worst nightmare and, unfortunately, a place far too many of us have been. You
trip right in front of his table in the cafeteria and end up covered in the
contents of your lunch, you think he’s saying ‘hi’ to you when really he’s just
trying to chat with one of his friends over your head… or, worst of all, he
somehow finds out that you like him before you’re ready to ‘fess up. Yikes!
Every one of these situations has the potential to get
awkward, and that’s the absolute last thing you want with your crush. But, even
though it may not feel like it, there are plenty of ways to defuse a
cringe-worthy sitch. Check out this little list of tips and tricks for ideas on
how to walk away from a potentially embarrassing convo, dignity intact.
Pick yourself back up, explain what happened if you can and,
most importantly, don’t reveal to your crush that you’re the least bit fazed.
If that means taking a little time to catch a couple deep breaths and reel in
that giveaway blush, go ahead and do it.
Don’t ignore your embarrassing moment, though. Attempt to blow
it off and you run the risk of being called out… which, as we all know, only
ever makes things more awkward. Instead, own up to it then continue to do what
you were doing. Everyone will forget the sitch was even embarrassing to begin
with if you act like you’ve already forgotten and, best of all, your crush will
be able to see another side of the cool, calm, collected you instead of a
flustered and mortified version of your normal self.
Play it up
In times of desperation, a little light sarcasm never hurts.
This technique works for getting out of just about any sticky situation, but it
happens to be particularly useful in a convo that’s ended up somewhere along
the lines of, “So, I heard you, like… like me.”
In this instance, your crush is standing right in front of
you, staring at you expectantly. You’re not sure why he’s saying this (Does he
likes you back? Is he just trying to test the waters? Is he just waiting to
laugh it off with you?), and you decide that it’d probably be best if he just
didn’t know. Brush it off by making it over the top with something like, “Oh,
wow. Guess that cat’s out of the bag now. Yeah, I’ve been meaning to tell you
for a while, but the wedding’s all planned. I guess we should be super thankful
to whoever told you that and make her a bridesmaid or something.”
Be sure to finish it off with a laugh or “just kidding,” in
case he doesn’t have a sense of humor. Odds are, your guy will catch on pretty
quickly, and start laughing before you’ve even finished talking. You’ll be able
to keep the cat in the bag for a
little while longer, and he’ll walk away with an impression of you as a witty,
down-to-earth kind of girl.
Laugh it off
Just about the worst thing you can do after a goof is try to
cover it up. There is nothing more revealing of how embarrassed you really are
about the whole situation. So, instead of that, take a different perspective on
your slip-up from the start. Stay funny and relaxed, and try your hand at a
little self-effacing humor with, “I can’t believe I just did that,” or, “Oh my
god, I’m such a klutz.” More likely than not, you’ll be able to get everyone
around you—including your crush—to start laughing with you, rather than
potentially at you.
