No rhythm? Zip coordination? 5 secrets to rocking that dance class anyway

If you’re tripping over your own two feet, or move your body in robotic ways, you’re probably thinking that dance is not the thing for you. But what if we told you that we’ve learned the tricks of the trade on how to rock a dance class anyway? Would you try it then? Dance can be the most fun and effective workout, so look over these tips. Don’t knock it till you try it!

Choose a dance style you’re really interested in

This is probably the most important start to rockin’ a dance class. Be sure to find a class that not only fits into your schedule, but also fits into your interests. If you’re not interested in the style of dance, or the music that is used, it will be much harder to find the rhythm.

Study the move before jumping in

If you can’t get the move down on the first try, don’t worry. There’s probably a bunch of other girls in the room that are feeling the exact same way. Take your time and make sure you really understand what the teacher is asking you to do. If you don’t understand, ask questions! You’ll want to make sure you understand one eight-count before you move on to the next.

Get some practice in

Before you head to the gym, try putting some music on that will likely be used in the class. Try finding the beat of these songs and dance around a little in your bedroom. Once you’ve learned some of the moves in the class, you can go home and practice those too. A lot of times, teachers will repeat moves and songs that they use in each class, so you’ll get used to it before you know it.

Go all out

You’ll look sillier just standing around than you will dancing around with no rhythm. Everyone else in the class will be trying their hardest, which will only draw more attention to you if you’re not going all out. You’re more likely to understand the moves more and move better to the beat of the song when you’re trying your hardest. Not to mention, you’re there for a workout!

Take a friend

Everything’s better when you’ve got one of your girls with ya. Chances are, you’re both nervous. Having her there in case you mess up will make things less awk; you two can just laugh it off. If you’re feeling embarrassed about asking the teacher for questions, look at your gal. Maybe she’s got the move down. Ya never know, maybe your rhythm will be better than hers, and she’ll be looking at you to see how the move is done!
