I’m getting braces soon and I’m so scared! Everyone keeps telling me how awful they are. What should I do?

First off, just ignore your older siblings and cousins’ stories about braces. That’s because, just like cell phones, braces have gotten way cooler in the last five years, says Dr. Katie Graber, an orthodontist near Chicago. The rickety metal railroad tracks of the past have morphed into colorful, clear, plastic, and even removable braces. “The people who have braces now aren’t telling bad stories, it’s just older people trying to get them worried,” says Dr. Graber.
