So there, Mom! Science explains why you hate broccoli (and other weird foods)


Confession time: I can’t stand broccoli. I don’t want to look at it, I don’t want to smell it and I don’t even want to think about eating it. Mom always thought I was just being picky, but it turns out science has finally explained my distaste for the superfood (editor’s note: You should TOTALLY eat broccoli. It’s so good for you!).

 

Variations on a gene that affects how people perceive bitterness can make people turn their noses up at broccoli and other bitter veggies. But that’s not all. The compound that gives some veggies and other bites (like wasabi and garlic) their pungent taste can be too strong for some folks to handle. And that rotting egg smell broccoli (and cauliflower and cabbage) gives off when it cooks? Yeah, not so appealing to other individuals.

 

So there ya have it, Ma. I’ll take a side of roasted taters and peas, please!
