Aquifer: A new dystopian read that might rival The Hunger Games

If you’re a Hunger Games fan who also loved Jeanne DuPrau’s The City of Ember, then you’re in major luck. Jonathan Friesen’s new dystopian novel, Aquifer, tells the story of an individual’s power amidst a tyrannical society in the year 2250, and we can’t get enough of these imaginative, futuristic novels.

While the City of Ember is scarce on electricity, Aquifer’s Luca and his people struggle with limited water. Here’s the breakdown: The Council controls the “Water Rats” that mine for water in the underground Aquifer, as well as the lives of the Toppers—people who live above ground. Got creativity and feelings? Better keep them in check, because artistic expression is definitely not allowed under the Council’s control.

Luca plays a bigger part in this situation than he bargained for. His dad’s the Deliverer, and he’ll inherit the responsibilities that come along with it. Every year, the Aquifer must descend underground to bargain with the “Rats” in order to ensure water for the Toppers. In the remaining dry, crackling landscape where rainfall is a rarity, the Deliverer’s chance at success can mean life or death for the Toppers. But Luca’s only 15, so he won’t have to worry about that for a while—that is until Luca’s dad suddenly disappears.

Throw in a little bit of forbidden romance with a girl working as a Water Rat, and that’s just the beginning. Luca has a lot to learn about his family, the Council and the secrets being kept from the Toppers.

Jonathan Friesen’s Aquifer is a page-turner. Be sure to grab a copy (in stores now!) then come back and share your thoughts.
