That's what she said: 10 superstar athletes on what it takes to win big

We all need inspiration to keep us on top of our game, and this week, we’re turning to the best and the brightest athletes around. These 10 women are serious superstars in their respective sports, and boy do they have some advice for you. Take a look…

Don’t sweat the small stuff

“I decided I can’t pay a person to rewind time, so I may as well get over it.” – Serena Williams, currently ranked as the #1 female tennis player in the world

It’s all about preparation

“I am a big believer in visualization. I run through my races mentally so that I feel even more prepared.” – Allyson Felix, Olympic gold medalist runner

Be open to criticism

“You have to be willing to accept the information, you have to be willing to work hard. You have to be motivated to go to practice with an open mind. You have to be willing to be criticized. Only you can do those things.” - Brandi Chastain, member of the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup-winning USA soccer team

Forget about the bad

“I feel like, with ski racing, you need to have a short memory. You crash all the time, and sometimes it's a really bad one, but sometimes it's not so bad.” – Lindsey Vonn, Olympic gold medalist in skiing

Pick a role model

“Annika has the type of game I want to work on. She's just so consistent. Hopefully I'll be like that one day.” – Michelle Wie, golfer who turned pro at 15

Start with a goal

“Goal setting and achieving those goals—that’s just what I do.” – Lisa Leslie, WNBA All-Star basketball player

Have a motto

“Breathe, believe, and battle.' My former coach, Troy Tanner, told us that before each match. Breathe—be in the moment. Believe—have faith that you can rise above it. Battle—you gotta be prepared to go for as long as it takes.” – Kerri Walsh Jennings, three-time Olympic gold medalist in beach volleyball

Keep it all in perspective

“Don’t ever lose sight of why you’re doing something. Sports can get competitive and you have to remind yourself why you love what you’re doing. If you ever lose sight of that enjoyment, take a break from the sport and come back to it. Time away can make you realize how much you miss it and why you loved it in the first place.” – Katie O’Donnell, most decorated field hockey athlete in the USA

Risks are worth taking

“Take those chances and you can achieve greatness, whereas if you go conservative, you'll never know. I truly believe what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Even if you fail, learning and moving on is sometimes the best thing.” – Danica Patrick, first female driver to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole race and qualify for the Daytona 500

Don’t let success go to your head

“I've never been cocky. Even right now I don't like to talk about the Olympics.” – Aly Raisman, Olympic gold medalist in women’s gymnastics
