Healthier trick-or-treat strategies we surprisingly don't hate


Don’t let the headline freak you out—there are no apples or pretzel packets to be found in this list of better-for-you options. We get it, Halloween is a night for candy, not worrying about calories or saturated fat or anything else. Nosh on…but when you’re plucking bites from that pumpkin-shaped bucket, try to keep these tips in mind…

 

Long-lasting treats, like Tootsie Roll Pops

Nutritious they’re not, but long-lasting treats like lollipops and Jolly Ranchers do have one thing going for them, health-wise: The longer you suck on them, the fewer candies you’ll be noshing on overall. And that’s a major plus for your waistline.

 

Sweet instead of sour

We’re not about to call candy health food, but if you want to do your teeth a favor—and, uh, avoid getting yelled at on your next trip to the dentist—pick a candy that isn’t sour. Researchers have proven that sour candies wreck your enamel. In fact, eating them is sort of like sucking on acid. Um. Yum?

 

Skip the fun size

There’s something about miniatures that make us think that we can gobble up as many as we want, and they sort of don’t count. Well, we’ve got some bad news: They do. Instead of popping a pile of mini Reese’s Cups, eat one or two full-size ones. That way, you get the satisfaction of your favorite candy and you remember exactly how much of it you’ve eaten, too.
