Ready for your daily dose of nasty? If you’re heading to the gym, just
back or resolving to go in the new year, there is one thing you absolutely,
positively need to do before you touch any gym equipment with your spandex-clad
body: wipe it down.
Oh come on, GL, you say—is that really
necessary? Well, if you don’t want to catch one of these six icky things, then,
according to doctors, it is:
methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, is an unpleasant,
tough-to-get-rid-of infection that likes to hang out on the moist,
bacteria-friendly environment of shared athletic equipment.
UTIs, or urinary tract
infections, are no laughing matter. They hurt like crazy and can be tougher to
banish than you might think.
E. coli is something we
typically hear about in food contamination problems, but it could be chillin’
at the gym, too. Yum? Not so much.
Athlete’s foot and other
icky fungi. Shower shoes are a must, but that’s not the only way to prevent it.
Warts, even those caused by
the human papilomavirus. Yep, that’s HPV—you didn’t read it wrong.
Influenza. You want to come
home from the gym feeling good, not achy and sick, right?
While the chance of coming down with something really bad is pretty
low, that doesn’t mean it’s nil. Do your bod a favor and help out your fellow
gym goers, too, by wiping down yoga mats, bike seats, handles and everything
else with alcohol-based wipes. Just in case.
