Best date hair ever? Exactly how to nail the bouncy blowout

Shiny, bouncy, touchable tresses—there’s nothing more irresistible than a fab blowout for date night (or any time, really). Celeb stylist MariLynne Mele of Blow, a New York City blow-dry bar, shares five get-smooth secrets.

1. Remove excess moisture

Sop up water by gently squeezing (never rubbing) locks with a towel. Next, work in a few drops of blow-dry prep lotion (we like Luxurious Volume Root Booster Blow Dry Lotion, $8, ulta.com). Grab your dryer and give hair a quick, all over blast until hair is just damp.

2. Clip It

Use clips (try Salon Care The Croco Clip, $6, sallybeauty.com) to get most of your strands out of the way, leaving only your bangs and face-framing pieces loose. Keep your sections small, so you’re not drying too much at a time, which causes frizz.

3. Get a fly dry

Using a large round brush in one hand and a dryer in the other, start at your hairline, drying 2-inch pieces at a time. Begin at the roots, moving the dryer and brush down your strands together repeatedly.

4. End with a cool blast

The trick to getting strands maximum volume is getting hair totally dry at the finish. To check, switch from hot air to cool when you’re almost finished. If it feels cold to the touch after, it may need another blast of hot air. When each section is dry, pull it up in a loose loop and clip it in place.

5. Make it last

When you’re finished, remove all clips and give your locks a final brush. Mist with a spray to lock down the look (Herbal Essences Naked Sheer Shine Mist, $7, amazon.com). Gorgeous!
