6 skin myths, busted! We bet you def didn't know #2!

We’ve all heard ‘em: old wives tales' about weird skin things that work…or don’t. We’re here to bust those myths and lay out the face facts for you, front and center.

Myth #1: Oily skin doesn’t need to be moisturized.

My skin already looks like it’s soaked, so I obvi don’t need to add any MORE moisture to it, right? Wrong! While your skin’s texture and appearance might be oily, it could still develop dry patches and rough spots. Oily skin doesn’t clear you of dry skin, too. It’s just as important for someone with oily skin to moisturize as it is for anyone else. Using a lighter cream made specifically for oily skin or a natural oil like jojoba will be in your best interest—plus, moisturizing oily skin will make your skin naturally produce less oil. Bonus!

Myth #2: Once you find a face wash routine you like, you should stick with it all year.

It’s easy to find one routine that seems to work well enough and stick with it forever. However, as the temperatures and humidity change outside with the seasons, your skin will be craving different things. In the winter it’s important to use a heavier cream that will add moisture to skin that’s being hit with all that cold, dry air. Summer and spring call for lighter, less oily products that won’t leave your face feeling like there’s a thick layer on it in the hot sun.

Myth #3: Exfoliating every day is great for skin.

Occasional exfoliation is a great way to unclog your pores and scrub out dry skin. Doing this too often, however, will only cause your skin to get irritated and break out even more. Instead of making this a daily routine, try sticking to 1-3 times a week.

Myth #4: If a new product starts making your skin break out, it’s not working.

As backwards as it may seem, if your skin suddenly gets ten times worse after starting a new cleanser, it might actually be a sign it’s doing its job. The initial breakout you experience is the new cleanser bringing out the impurities and gunk that’s been stashed away in your pores. Stick to the wash for at least two or three weeks before deciding if it’s no good. After all, the saying goes, things often get worse before they get better.

Myth #5: You only need sunscreen in the summer.

False! You should actually be applying it all year round. Just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean the sun isn’t shining down. You could potentially be exposed to the same amount of UVA rays in the winter as you are in the summer.

Myth #6: Expensive products are always better than generic or drugstore brands.

Just because something has a huge price tag on it doesn’t mean it’s better by any means. It’s what’s on the inside that counts. Sometimes the best combination of ingredients is in the $10 bottle and not the $75 one. Less can often really be more.
