Healthy add-ins that make our favorite bites even tastier

There’s something so comforting about digging in to one of your favorite snacks, meals or drinks, right? But sometimes, we have them so often, we need a little bit of variety. Yeah, you could just add bacon—that’s what all the restaurants do—but we like these healthy add-ins even better.

The dish: Steaming hot oatmeal

The choice: Dried fruit. And for a dash of creamy goodness, stir in a splash of 2 percent milk.

The drink: Hot cocoa

The choice: Ground nutmeg. Freshly ground is wonderfully aromatic, but pre-ground is easy and just as delicious.

The dish: Peanut butter sandwich

The choice: Sweet apple slices. Opt for the juiciest fruits you can find!

The dish: Chop salad

The choice: Cottage cheese. It’s lean and packed with protein, and if the texture bugs you when it’s solo, you won’t even notice if it’s in a salad.

The dish: Hummus

The choice: Fresh veggies. Pita is awesome, don’t get us wrong, but freshly chopped peppers, carrots and celery? Yummy and way good for you.

The dish: Yogurt

The choice: Fresh fruit. A tip? Get plain Greek yogurt and smush some fresh fruit with a spoon or cut it up into little pieces. Stir it in, and you’re flavoring your yogurt minus all the weird chemicals some companies put into it.

The dish: Couscous

The choice: Herbs and chopped nuts. Try different combos, like almonds and parsley or pistachios and mint.

The dish: Mac ‘n’ cheese

The choice: Caramelized onion. Sautee it until it starts to brown, then toss it in and bake until the cheese is bubbly.

What's your favorite add-in? Tell us in the comments!
