Quit it! 5 things we wish doctors would stop doing

It’s no secret that when given the choice between going to the doctor and staying home, chances are we’re gonna want to stay home. And while no one really enjoys sitting in a waiting room endlessly before hopping on a scale, answering a bunch of weird questions and then being prodded by a doc in a white coat, it wouldn’t be that bad…if only we could ban five cringe-worthy things:

#1. Asking us uncomfortable questions when our parents are in the room—and then when we answer, ask if we’re lying. Come on, you’re the adult! If you have to ask us about drugs and sex and awkward things, couldn’t you ask Mom to leave the room for a sec?

#2. Scolding us about not getting in our daily allotment of calcium or fruits and veggies, or not flossing enough, or still having some food stuck in our braces. We’re not perfect, we get it. Telling us what we should be doing—and giving us helpful suggestions that make it easier to do those things—is great. Yelling at us when we don’t do them makes us not want to come see you at all.

#3. Talking when you have a hand, toothbrush or tongue depressor in our mouths. You can’t understand what we’re saying anyway. Just chill and ask your questions in a few.

#4. Pressing on various body parts, asking us if it hurts and then continuing to press down. Ouch! Do we have to smack your hand away to get the point across? For that matter, it really does not seem necessary for dental hygienists to saw away at our gums when flossing.

#5. Assuming we’ll speak up when something super awkward is bothering us. Yeah, we wish our discharge didn’t stink, but who the heck wants to say that? Asking pointed questions about each little thing that could be wrong might be tedious, but you’ll stand a chance of getting an honest answer. Bonus? Have slips of paper available and ask your receptionist to tell us to write down any awkward questions we might have while we’re in the waiting room. Easy peasy.
