What the what? Teens wilding is now a huge thing--and a major problem for public safety

Last Friday, teens in Florida shut down the state fair when they began rioting on the annual student wristband night. One teen died that night. On Monday, hundreds of them mobbed a New York mall, terrifying employees and other shoppers—and it wasn’t the first time it had happened in that location. This time, three were arrested.

Police officers have started calling the behavior ‘wilding,’ and characterize it as a band of youths going on violent rampage in public places, attacking people and causing mass chaos and destruction. The term originated in the 1980s, but it is back in full force, seeing a peak in the last few years.

With groups numbering dozens of adolescents to hundreds, police are left trying to figure out exactly what they can do to keep public places safe. At the Florida State Fair, officers had to stand down after teens began to fight back and assault members of the force who were trying to corral the running mob.

While some participants might think it to be harmless fun along the lines of flash mobs, thieving, injuries and yes, even death, often occur. This isn’t just a bunch of people having a blast.

Have you ever been wilding, or do you have friends who have done it? What do you think of the trend?
