This is nasty, but when I wake up in the morning, I have a tone of mucus in the back of my throat—so much, it makes me gag. If I cough it up, it’s green and sick-looking. Is something wrong? Is there anything I can do to get rid of it?
No worries ‘bout the nasty, babe—we’ve heard it all! And
yep, this is definitely not a fun way to wake up. The good news is that
everyone has mucus. It’s created by tissues all along your mouth, throat, nose,
sinuses—even your gastrointestinal tract and your lungs. Your body secretes
mucus in order to protect itself from drying out. That’s why we tend to get all
snotty during the winter, when the weather is cold and dry.
Gross fact of the day: According to WebMD,
your bod makes 1 to 1.5 liters of goo every single day. And most of it goes
down your throat, and you don’t even notice it. Usually, however, that mucus
thickens up and makes itself noticeable and annoying when something is off
kilter. Things like colds, allergies and general dryness can trigger
To rule out common triggers, try putting a humidifier in
your room over night. You can also try taking an over-the-counter
antihistamine, though we do recommend giving your doc a call first. If that
doesn’t help, schedule an appointment and get checked out. Chances are, it’s something
that can be fixed pretty easily.
