Did you know these 7 Oscar-nominated flicks were originally books?

It’s award season and the biggest award show yet is just around the corner! The 86th annual Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) airs this Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m. ET on ABC.

We love movies and we love books, so nothing’s better than when a book-turned-movie gets nominated for some of the most prestigious awards. Here are seven of our favorite reads that eventually hit the big screen and got the recognition they deserve.

  • 1frozenqueen.jpg

    Movie: Frozen

Book: The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen

Nominated for: Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Let It Go”), 2014

This movie hit big in the box office and we fell in love instantly. From hilarious snowmen to a wonderful story about sisterhood, this flick has it all. We’re sure that Frozen will come out on top this year!

  • 2greatgatsby.jpg

    Movie: Great Gatsby

Book: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Nominated for: Best Achievement in Costume Design and Best Achievement in Production Design, 2014

Leonardo DiCaprio took on the role of Jay Gatsby and there was no turning back. This movie stayed true to the outstanding novel and made the scenes come to life with amazing costumes, set design and special effects.

  • 3bookthief.jpg

    Movie: The Book Thief

Book: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Nominated for: Best Original Score, 2014

The Book Thief ‘s music is one to beat this awards season! The movie shows the life a young girl during the Nazi times in Germany and how she helps save a life. Full of historical truths, it’s a must-see.

  • 4extremely.jpg

Movie: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Book: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

Nominated for: Best Motion Picture and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, 2012

Although it didn’t win at the Oscars, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is still amazing. Audiences follow along the confusing and difficult life of a 9-year-old boy. With heartwarming moments and a shocking twist, it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.

  • 5warhorse.jpg

    Movie: War Horse

Book: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

Nominated for: Best Motion Picture, 2012

War Horse follows the life of a teenage boy and his beloved horse. The unlikely pair knows no bounds and they stick together—even through war. Not only was this a book and then movie, but it’s also now an acclaimed stage play.

  • 6LOTR.jpg

    Movie: Lord of the Rings

Book: Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien

Nominated for: Best Motion Picture, 2002

Lord of the Rings is a phenomenon that will live on forever. The trilogy as a whole gained an astounding 30 Oscar nominations over the years, and it was all well deserved. The movies brought a whole new world to life and left audiences everywhere rooting for Frodo and his quest.

  • 7harrypotter.jpg

Movie: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

Book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

Nominated for: Best Achievement in Makeup and Best Achievement in Visual Effects, 2012

Much like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter is one of the most successful franchises to ever surface. From amusement parks to restaurants, the memorabilia can be seen on almost anything. The movies represented the books extremely well and made us all wish Hogwarts was actually a real please.
