Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz talk Divergent

Divergent is so close to hitting theaters, we can almost taste it. While we count down the final hours until the highly-anticipated dystopian flick lands on the big screen (reminder: that would be tomorrow, March 21), we have one final treat for you—straight from the movie’s Chicago set.

As you can imagine, watching Veronica Roth’s book come to life was unreal. While hanging in the massive soundstage last spring, in a room they created to serve as the Pit, we were able to watch two of our favorite stars Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz get into character as Tris and Christina just a few feet away. The scene they were filming? The train ride en route to play capture the flag.

Don’t worry, we’re not going to spoil any details on how the scene plays out. But we will spoil what happened when we sat down with Shailene and Zoe at the end of the day. Here’s what they had to say about their kick-butt characters and the Divergent moment that’s tops in their books.

What’s it like going into a project that already has such a huge fan base?

Zoe Kravitz: There’s some pressure there, but once you start shooting, you kind of have to let it go or you won’t really do a good job because you’ll be too focused on the fear. I think everyone is just trying to be true to the characters and hopefully everyone will respond well to that.

Shailene, what attracted you to the role of Tris?

Shailene Woodley: I really liked the fact that she is a very normal person in bizarre situations. She’s not a superhero and she’s not necessarily any more brave than anyone else in the world, but she has to rise to the occasion.

What were your first thoughts on Theo as Four?

Shailene: When Theo walked in [to the audition], he was just a giant dork. He’s such a lovely human being. It’s really exciting to work with him and I learned a lot from him. He had an entire life outside of acting before he got into this business, which is refreshing to meet somebody who isn’t all wrapped up in his world.

Was it challenging to get into character?

Zoe: I [didn’t find] it very challenging. It’s a really fun role to play. Christina is super brave and feisty and fun and honest.

Shailene: Some of the things we have to do are a little challenging physically, but I guess emotionally, the biggest challenge with Tris is trying to play the fact that she came from a selfless society and moved into one that values bravery. I don’t want it to seem obvious, so I guess keeping it subtle would be the biggest challenge.

Do you relate to your characters in any way?

Zoe: Christina has like zero filter, which I also have. She speaks her mind.

Shailene: I relate to Tris in the sense that, everybody is very humbled…it’s whether you allow your light to shine in the world, which makes a difference. And I think in this movie, for Tris by the end of it, her light is helping save Dauntless [and] everybody from the government.

What was your favorite scene to film?

Shailene: The Ferris wheel.

Zoe: I’m sticking with the crowd surfing. It was super fun!

Be sure to check out Divergent when it hits screens tomorrow, March 21.
