Teen convicted of disorderly conduct because he recorded his bullies harassing him

Christian Stanfield has been bullied for months—and reported it to school officials—when he decided to take matters into his own hands. One day in class, when the bullies were tormenting him again, right in front of a teacher, he took out his iPad and recorded them doing it. The recording is seven minutes long. On it, you can hear one student telling another to pull the boy’s pants down. When the teacher intervened, one of the bullies said, “What? I was just trying to scare him.”

“I wanted some help,” Christian said during court. “This wasn’t just a one-time thing. This always happens every day in that class.” Spitwads have been thrown at him. He’s been hit with books. And, as his recording has shown, classmates threaten to expose him and otherwise abuse him.

Despite complaints from him and his mother, his Pennsylvania high school did little to curb the bullying. And when the iPad recording came to light, they decided to categorize it as an illegal wiretapping incident, and charged him with disorderly conduct.

A judge fined him $25 and he was forced to erase the recording and attend Saturday detention. During the hearing, Christian’s assistant principal said he did not believe the actions taken against Christian qualified as bullying.

The family plans to appeal the ruling and file a civil suit against the school district, Daily Mail reports. Meanwhile, we’re in awe. Seriously? This happened? Tell us what YOU think in the comments.
