Beauty 101: Your ultimate mascara dos and don'ts

Mascara is beauty staple we can't live without, but it’s sometimes a li’l tough to apply. It can be a hassle trying to keep it from getting on your lids, under your eyes or on your clothes. Some beauty gurus say to put it on before any other makeup, some say after. Luckily, GL is here to clear the air with our top dos and don’ts for this tricky essential.

DO check for smudging after you apply your mascara. It's kinda difficult not to get any on your skin during application. If you do happen to end up with smudges, wait until the mascara dries, and then gently swipe it away with a cotton swab. If necessary, touch up any makeup you might have dinged.

DON'T judge mascara by its price tag. Drugstore mascaras can be just as good, if not better, than some of those in a department store. Wasting money isn't pretty, and it won't necessarily help you to achieve great lashes.

DO apply mascara after eyeshadow and eyeliner. Trying to apply mascara before any other eye makeup will lead to flaking and smearing. Yuck! Putting mascara on after also keeps ya from piling on too much of the stuff before you see how the rest of your makeup looks.

DON'T curl your lashes after applying mascara. If you use an eyelash curler, use it before you apply any mascara. Curling after you've already put on mascara can pull out your lashes and leave them looking unnatural, bent and clumpy.

DO apply mascara from the base of your lashes to the tips. Using a swift and single sweep, wiggling the wand as you pull away from your lashes to prevent clumping. If you plan on applying more than one coat, do it before the first one dries.

DON'T “pump” your mascara wand. We know its super tempting, but the in-and-out motion from pumping forces air into the tube, causing mascara to dry out more quickly. Instead, dip once and dab any excess with a tissue.

DO Only wear waterproof mascara in warmer weather or when you think your eye makeup might get wet, not every day. It’s too hard to remove on the daily!
