Feel-Good Friday: 13-year-old becomes the youngest girl to climb Mt. Everest

Climbing Mt. Everest is one of the world’s greatest feats. At 29,035 feet, it’s the tallest mountain with a perilous terrain to match its vertigo-inducing heights. Even the most advanced hikers have difficulty finishing the hike.

But wouldn’t ya know it: this Sunday a 13-year-old girl from India became the youngest female to scale the summit. What’s even more astonishing is her story of how she got all the way to the tippy top.

Malavath Purna comes from Andhra Pradesh, a poor tribal region in India. To put things in perspective, her father earns 35,000 rupees ($600) a year as a farmer.

Thankfully, there are programs to help and encourage the impoverished youth in that area. In this case, the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Educational Society, a social welfare organization, developed a climbing program for students.

Malavath and and Sadanapalli Anand, a 17-year-old student from the same region, were picked to be a part of the 52-day expedition. Our girl nailed her climbing exam back in November, earning an “A.”

With the help of 10 Sherpas, the two students reached the summit this past Sunday. There, Malavath placed an Indian flag and said, “The world is very small.”

Yup, and now it’s a girl who’s at the top of it. Way to go, Malavath!
