Keep it pretty in plaid with this glam DIY backpack for back to school

Back to school means lots of new supplies, but lets face it... they can get boring pretty fast. So, if you're tired of looking at that same ol' beaten up backpack that can barely hold your books, why not give it a crafty makeover? Just follow the directions below to create a one-of-a-kind backpack that will be sure to turn heads. Best part is? It costs practically nothing and it's totally customizeable (you're welcome). 


What you’ll need:

  • Plaid button up shirt (you can find an old one in your closet or at a  thrift store)
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread or a sewing machine
  • Ribbon or rope (24 inches depending on your backpack size)


What you'll do:

  1. Cut off the bottom, the sleeves and the neckline of that old, oversized flannel (remember: the size of the backpack depends on how much you actually cut off!).
  2. Sew up the sides and bottom of the cut up shirt with your needle and thread or your sewing machine so a bag is created.
  3. Create a loop at the top with the two ends open. Sew it together.
  4. Thread your ribbon or rope through the loop to create a draw string tie.
  5. Take the fabric that you cut off from the sleeves and sew pieces that  are about 20x2 inches to create straps.
  6. Attach the two top ends on top of each other and the bottom ends on opposite sides.
