So you wanna start shaving? Here's how to talk to your 'rents about it

If you've started to feel some hair growing and just can't take the fuzz, you've probably started to think about shaving. And even though hair is technically there to protect our skin from harm (like sunburn), we know it could be totally uncomfortable having it (especially when all of your friends are already shaving).

If you're looking to get rid of that annoying leg or armpit hair and need some options, read on. We've got everything from creams to shaving alternatives, plus advice on how to bring the subject up to Mom so you can get the O-K to kick that stubble to the curb!

Hair removal creams/Lotions

One of the easiest ways to hair removal is by using hair removal creams, lotions or foams. In most cases, all you have to do is apply the product on the area where you have hair, wait a few minutes and then rinse off. Some creams can even be used while you shower! Creams, lotions or foams can be used for legs, bikini area, underarms, arms and face. This method of hair removal is totally painless and doesn’t take too much time. It can be a little bit messy (and stinky at times) but it's totally safe...just follow the instructions and be sure not to leave it on too long!

One of the most common methods of hair removal is shaving. Try buying a razor with a moiture bar to start off (a moisture bar is a circle of gel that comes around the blades to protect your skin). Make sure to be super carefully as you glide the razor over your skin and always use shaving cream!

Although this is a less common option for teens, waxing is also a form of hair removal. Waxing is when a hot or cold wax is applied to the skin where the hair is, and removed with a strip of material. This method of hair removal can be really painful, but it lasts longer! If you want to try waxing, make sure you have a parent or gaurdian helping you do it or get it professionally done (you don't want to do this alone hurt yourself!).

Okay, so this one is not a hair removal method but it's an alternative. If you or your parents don’t think you are ready for hair removal...maybe you can try this! When done correctly, bleaching is a safe way to lighten the hair so it's way less visible.

Talking to Mom

Asking your parent or guardian for permission could a little nerve racking. We reccomend approaching the subject to the rents' with some background info and options. Do your research, take notes and bring it to your parents. Let them know that you think it might be time for some hair removal and that you’ve looked some methods up. If they are hesitant about it, introduce the bleaching option. If they still think you are not ready, that's OK! At least you’ve broken the ice on the subject so when it comes back around, it will be even easier to talk about. Your parents will also see that you are mature and responsible by looking up background info and coming to them for permission, not going behind their back.

Have you already started shaving? How did you approach your parents and what worked best for you? Tell us in the comments below!
