7 character costumes that don't need to be sexy to be amazing

There is something freeing about Halloween. After all, you get to dress up as anything or anyone you want and run around asking for candy. Well…until you get a good look at the costumes available. Unless you’re DIYing your own, costumes for girls are getting kinda limited. You can be a female character or you can be sexy—bonus points for being both. But if you just want to channel a classic hero like, say, Superman for the night sans short skirt and serious cleavage? Forget about it.

Well, we’re throwing costume shop rules out the window this year. Here are seven characters we’d gladly dress up as this year.

A Ghostbuster

Um, it’s October. As in brrr. As in Mom would be chasing after you holding a coat if you wore this. Besides, with matching jumpsuits, this one makes for a great group costume—complete with ghost, of course.

Harry Potter

Or with your new hipster glasses, “Hipster Harry Potter,” as we like to call him. Nobody said ya had to stick with Hermione.

Indiana Jones

Looking for some old-school adventure? Travel the world—er, neighborhood for a night as good ol’ Indy. Don’t forget your bull whip!

Mario and Luigi

The costume available here is called “Heroic Maria.” Ladies, let’s just be Mario complete with faux ‘stache and a Luigi sidekick, OK?

Thor

In fact, grab the whole gang (and a lot of tin foil to recreate the armor) and go as The Avengers. Ya don’t have to go all “Sassy Thor” with it.

Batman

Hm, we’re noticing a superhero trend here… If the Wonder Woman barely-there bit isn’t quite your style, why not grab a black jumpsuit and DIY it up, Gotham style?

The Mad Hatter

This one is just begging for a vintage store. Hello, tailored jacket, tweed pants and adorable top hat, goodbye perplexing mini skirt.
