5 simple tips to make spring cleaning your closet a breeze

Out with the old, in with the new! Spring is here, and it’s time to make some room in that overflowing closet of yours for the best new trends of the season. While clearing out your closet can be therapeutic (and even fun), sometimes it can get totally overwhelming. Massive piles of clothes all over your bedroom, clothes you're not sure whether to keep or pitch...ugh. We know the feeling, so we came up with five awesome and easy tips for cleaning up your wardrobe—without all the stress.

Decide if it’s time for a clean-out

Is your closet bursting with clothes you haven’t worn since who-knows-when? You might want to convince yourself that there will be an occasion for you to wear that sequin top, but stick to the rule of thumb: if you haven’t worn it in the past year, put it in the giveaway pile. Chances are, you won't miss it.

Determine how much time you want to spend cleaning

Cleaning out a closet can take hours—sometimes even days. It all depends on how thoroughly you wanna clean and how much free time you have to devote to it. If the thought of clearing out years of forgotten sweaters makes you wanna scream, we suggest extending the process over a couple of weekends. Tackle one type of item at a time: tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes, accessories...you get the picture.

How are you gonna do it, logistically?

We highly suggest laying out the pieces on your bed before throwing them in the toss pile or keeping them on the rack. When your clothes are all jammed together hanging up, you can’t get a good look at them. To avoid post-spring cleaning regrets, take time to check out each item before it’s gone for good.

Which items mean too much to get rid of?

There are definitely gonna be a couple things that you can’t possibly break up with. Maybe they have sentimental value, or are from an event you wish had never ended (we’re talking about that Homecoming dress you were wearing when you danced with your crush for the first time...sigh). While it’s totally OK to hold onto a few things that really mean something to you, there are some pieces you don’t need to keep around. For example, your mom’s vintage earrings: keep. A concert t-shirt from 2008 with a chocolate milk stain: toss.

Toss, sell or donate: the choice is yours

When you’re done clearing out your unwanted pieces, decide what has value and what doesn’t. If it’s in good shape but not exactly on-trend or current, donate it. If it’s a timeless item that you just never really wear that much, re-sell. If it’s got tons of holes and stains, toss. It's that easy.
