3 questions to ask yourself before signing up for *another* extracurricular

The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to try new things—but it's also easy to try *too* many new things. Whether you’re thinking about trying out for the soccer team, joining drama club or volunteering at your local animal shelter, it’s important to evaluate the pros and cons before taking on a new commitment. After all, you want to challenge yourself and pursue your passions, but you don’t want to spread yourself too thin. Before choosing your next extracurricular activity, take a few minutes to ask yourself these questions...

1. Why am I interested in this activity?

Extracurriculars aren’t just about filling up a resume or fulfilling requirements for school. You should pick activities that you care about. If you’re going to spend hours a week doing something, you want to enjoy it. (Hint: Joining for your bestie or a boy is not a good reason.)

2. Do I have enough time to fully commit to this extracurricular?

We’re sure that your schedule is totally busy. You have school all day, plus homework to do each night. And if you’re already involved in other clubs or activities, you don’t want to start something new that will conflict with your piano lessons or your sports practice—you can’t be in two places at once! Most importantly, you have to keep in mind how adding yet another activity to your schedule will affect your mental health. It’s essential to leave time to relax, whether that means writing in a journal or hanging with your friends.

3. What will I gain from participating?

There are a ton of benefits to extracurricular activities. You can learn about awesome topics, meet new friends or gain super cool skills. When you choose things to try, think about how you’ll be a better person as a result. Growing up is all about learning, developing and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Get involved in activities that will help you learn about who you are and what you like.
