My friend called me fat!

One of my best friends sort-of called me fat. The first time she "mentioned" it I totally ignored it. The second time she mentioned it I kind of thought she didn't mean to. But, the next day she mentioned it AGAIN. I don't know what to think of her anymore. Any way you can help? Please help.

Rule number one: Friends don’t call friends “fat.”  Trust me, I learned this lesson the hard way when I made a not-so-nice comment about my friend in high school.  It really hurt her feelings and it made me feel awful.

It’s not going to be a fun or easy conversation, but you absolutely have to let her know exactly how you feel.  You may find it hard to believe, but it’s entirely possible she may have no idea she’s even hurting you—and she won’t know unless you tell her.

Instead of waiting for her to make fun of you again, try stopping it before it starts.  You can call her up or write a nice e-mail.  Let her know it bothers you when she makes comments about your weight and that it makes you feel bad.  You may even want to ask her why she keeps mentioning it.

If your friend sincerely apologizes for her less-than-friendly behavior and promises not to mention it again, that’s great.  But if she continues to make fun of you, that’s so not cool and you may want to rethink your friendship with her.  Remember, friends should build you up and make you feel better, not knock you down and hurt your feelings. True beauty, no matter what anyone says, comes from within and you’re beautiful.

Lots of love,
