New year, new room: Feng Shui style!

The New Year is around the corner, ladies, and it’s time for a fresh start to a spankin’ new year 2008. Start the year off right by revin’ up your room, Feng Shui style! Out with the old and in with the new.
Have you ever noticed how some places make you feel anxious and tired while other places make you feel relaxed and full of energy? Did you ever imagine that the things around you – your furniture, books and even a beanbag chair – could have a powerful effect on you?

Whoa! Welcome to the world of Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”). Feng Shui is the Chinese art of arranging furniture and decorations in such a way in order to create positive energy! By designing a room to make you feel and do your best, you’re putting the forces of nature on your side. Here’s how to Feng Shui, your way.

1. Clutter. In Feng Shui, clutter is the first thing you should tackle. Believe it or not, if there’s a mess in any square of your room, it could have a messy effect on the area of your life that square represents. If the clutter is in the middle of the left side of your room, for example, in the square that relates to “Family,” at-home relationships could become particularly complicated and bothersome. Have you been fighting with your brother or sister a lot lately? Take a look around and see where you can straighten up your room – and your life.
2. Your Bed. Feng Shui experts say that sleeping too close to the door might make you feel tired and spaced out when you wake up in the morning because your door brings in a lot of energy – too much, in fact, to be able to have a good night’s sleep. The best place to put your bed is as far from the door as possible, which would be in the corner diagonal from your door. If your door is in the middle of the wall, your bed can be in either corner across from it. Another reason to put your bed across the room is because the two corners opposite your door – the squares that represent “Wealth & Prosperity” and “Relationships” – are powerful spots, and sleeping there could make you feel more confident and energized when you wake up in the morning.

If your room is too small and you can’t move your bed, you might want to hang a crystal between the bed and the door. That should deflect some of the energy and make you feel more energized when you wake up.

3. Your Desk. Both corners opposite your door have the best energy, so consider putting your desk in a remaining corner. Then, have it face the door. That might seem weird at first, but according to Feng Shui, you shouldn’t have your back to the door. If you can’t see what’s sneaking up on you – like your little sister – it could give you the feeling you don’t have control over things in your life.
If you face your door, you may feel more confident in solving problems you’re having with schoolwork, friends, or family. If you’d rather have your desk face the wall but also want to increase your confidence, there’s a simple solution: You can hang a mirror up on the wall so you can see what’s behind you!

4. Your Dresser. Where your dresser goes is not too important. Just be sure not to put it behind your door so closely that the door won't open all the way. This could cut off the flow of energy coming through the door. The same goes for laundry baskets, stereos, and anything else that might stop the door from opening all the way.

5. Windows. If your windows are positioned directly across from your door in such a way that you can see straight out them the minute you step into your room, a lot of the energy might be escaping from your room. As a result, you might feel bored, spaced-out, or tired. To get reenergized, hang wind chimes or a crystal on a red string between the door and window.

Crystals and wind chimes are supposed to catch the energy and disperse it around the room, making you feel happier, more upbeat, and better able to concentrate. Crystals or wind chimes could also make you feel like you have more control over problems and their solutions. So what are you waiting for? No need to paint or spread tons of money on new decor. Just take what you already have and move it around your room to the appropriate spots. Be sure to get your folks to sign off on your rearrangement first!
