A Tough Transition...

I am in the eighth grade and I'm about to go to high school. I am super confused and it upsets me! I'm extremely hyper. I just can't help it. My friends get mad at my every now and then for being too hyper, and I don't know how to control myself! I've tried everything! I even tried coming to school one day and not talking at all, but it didn't work and I ended up becoming my normal hyper self once I got inside the classroom.

I feel like I'm being too annoying. And also I think I have bipolar self esteem. One thing can cause me to freak out and cry! I was goofing off with my friend in the lunch room and she pushed me into one of my other friends who asked me to chill, and I started to cry! I get upset way too easily!

I can get super depressed at times too. I'll try telling my friend but she just shrugs it off and says her life is worse. It's like a competition to her! I'm so confused and scared to go to high school with all these mood swings. I've been having these mood swings very often and for a while, maybe 8 months.  I haven't started my period yet, so I know it's not that. What is it with me? What do I do?

-Confused and Scared

Hey babes, I don't blame you for being confused! Entering high school is a really big deal in your life and it can seem really scary. Plus, you have all these hormones that make everything seem sooo much more complicated. For me, high school was my first time in a public school and I spent the entire summer stressing about it! But the fact that you're getting all your stress out of the way now is a huge benefit - you are going to be so totally cool, calm, and collected when you walk through those doors!

First of all, take a deep breath and let it out. This seems like a no-brainer but remembering to breathe can help you let out all that pent-up energy. Next, I would ask your friend how she's feeling about all of these changes. Instead of being in a competition, why not share the feelings you have? She might be just as paranoid, but hiding it a little better.

Secondly, if you haven't talked to your parents, now would be a great time. They've been there too, so when you tell them how confused you are, I'm sure they'll have some stories that will calm you down.

And girl, if you still feel really bothered, confused, hyper, and upset, it might be time to ask the 'rents to take you to a doctor. It could be as simple as hormones, but if you feel this bothered by it, getting checked out by a doc couldn't hurt either. Or you could try talking it out with your doc or a guidance counselor. Just letting your feelings out to a nonjudgmental adult could feel sooo good, plus they're bound to give ya great advice. Better safe than sorry, right? So, chin up, chica! You've got a new plan of action, and you'll be ready for high school in no time.
