Beware B.O.

I am always worried I have B.O., and I have no basis for my worry. This one girl at my school smells horrible and everyone makes fun of her for smelling bad. I am worried I will end up like her. I shower every other day, but I always forget to put on deodorant. I just forget! But the thing is, sometimes I smell myself because someone says "Ew, something stinks," so I get worried it’s me. Whenever I ask my friends if I smell bad, they say, "No!" except sometimes my best friend will be like "Sorry, but I think your hands smell sorta funky" in a nice way and I get worried.

1. What are some shampoos that smell nice but are not overly expensive?
2. What are some soaps that smell nice?
3. How can you remind yourself to always wear deodorant?
4. How many times a week should you shower? I hear every other day but I just want to be sure.
5. Is there some way to check if you smell bad?

-Body Odor Obsessive

It’s completely normal that you’re worried about being stinky. That’s the first step to preventing any unsightly odors. However, there is a difference between being aware of your scent and being a nervous nelly over it.

I think your first step is to shower everyday. You don’t need to wash your hair, but as you get older; your sweat glands are going to change. You need to be cleaning yourself every day. Use a mild body wash and a sponge or washcloth and thoroughly clean every expanse of skin on your body, including the area “down there.” Shampoo and body soap scent has nothing to do with B.O and it isn’t going to help your problem. Any kind will serve its purpose.

Your next step is to wear deodorant every day! I know it’s hard to remember but you need to make it a habit. Keep it next to your toothbrush so that every time you brush your teeth, you remember to put it on. It may be helpful to keep a travel-sized deodorant in your locker so you can reapply during the day if you start to perspire.

You don’t need to check yourself all the time, usually when you think you can smell yourself nobody else can, trust me. Just make sure to stay clean, wash your hands and scrub, scrub, scrub, in the shower. With the hot weather coming you are going to be really sweaty and sticky by the end of the day. There is no way to check if you smell bad but as long as you are showering daily and wearing deodorant, there is no way you CAN smell bad.

If you are still nervous about it, just ask a friend. It’s like telling someone their zipper is down or they have food in their teeth, you want someone you care about to know if they need to check themselves.

XOXO,
Jana
