American Idol Recap: Happy Birthday!

While some of the top 8 showcased their perky personalities and outstanding vocals, few idols fell just a bit short. The idols selected songs from their birth year and we even got a glimpse of their adorable baby pics, not to mention pictures of the judges, too. Even as a wee tot Simon had that devilish look, go figure!

Danny Gokey started off the night with the 1980 hit “Stand By Me.”  Danny def showcased his vocal range and did a good job of hitting those high notes. His original arrangement of the song did not overly impress the judges, but his voice totally did! Simon especially thought that the ending was terrific; however, the middle was a little lazy. A-

Second, was Kris Allen singing the 1985 song “All She Wants to do is Dance.” Although Kris gave an energetic performance accompanied by his guitar, the song choice wasn’t too smart, in fact Simon referred to it as “stupid.” While the performance was not his best, his likeable personality may just push him through to the next round. B

Performing third was Lil (yes, Lil is her real name) Rounds singing the 1984 hit “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” I was not a fan of Lil’s performance this week and agree with the judges that it was a complete copycat act. The judges are missing the Lil that they used to see stand out and quite frankly, so do I. C’mon Rounds, show us what you got! B-

Anoop Desai went next singing the 1986 song “True Colors.” This was definitely one of Anoop-dawg’s best performances and I was totally in awe of his soothing, controlled voice. He made the song current and Paula thought that his true colors came out for sure! A-

Scott MacIntyre performed the 1985 song “The Search is Over.” Sorry to say this, but it was probably my least fave performance of the night. Although Scott changed it up and played his electric guitar, he seemed to be a bit out of his comfort zone. The judges had similar feelings, as they felt that Scott had a lot of off moments and the performance lacked star quality. C+

Up next was Allison Irahetta singing the 1992 song “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Well Allison was wrong because she def made me love her! She gave the song a jazzy, soulful sound and the performance was filled with passion and emotion. Her voice was strong as usual and Randy compared her to Kelly Clarkson. A

Matt Giraud gave an awesome comeback performance singing the 1985 song “Part Time Lovers.” A true turn around from last week, Matt sounded amazing and hit each high note with ease. He made the song sound youthful and stayed true to himself. The judges thought that it was one of the best performances of the night. A+

Wrapping up the show was an outstanding performance by Adam Lambert singing the 1982 song “Mad World.” I have never heard the song before, but I was absolutely blown away by Adam. Every note was impeccable and he sounded so amazing that he actually got a standing ovation from Simon himself, which was def a first. A+

The idols put on another entertaining show with a few performances that left me breathless (particularly those by Adam and Matt). We may have to say goodbye to Scott or perhaps Lil, who just weren’t on the same level as the other contestants. Who do you think should go? Tell us what you think!
