Totally Talentless?

My friends are better than me at everything! I do gymnastics, can’t do a cartwheel, kick-over, flip, round-off, backbend or pretty much anything else! My friends can do all of that! I’m like the other girl who can’t.

I take piano, I’m not good at that! I’m not good at anything! I can’t sing, act, dance, play sports, anything! I also can’t rollerskate. No matter how hard I try, I can’t do anything! When my friends do cool things, I hang back because I can’t do anything! I really wanna be good at something! Please help me!

Hey Gal,

I know it may feel like you’re the only person in the world that isn’t the best at anything, but guess what!? You’re not alone, girlfriend! I used to get so frustrated that unlike some of my friends, movie stars, or Olympic champs, I wasn’t AMAZING at any one thing. Don't sweat it, sistah. No one says that you're supposed to have the fashion sense of a celeb or the acting chops of a starlet. I bet you're GREAT at something, it's just taking you a li'l longer to find your forte.

What you have to understand is that everyone is different. Maybe you can’t do the round-off back handspring that some of your friends can do. Gymnastics may not be your specialty! Keep it up with the gymnastics team, but just have FUN with that. Once you loosen up, I'm sure you'll start doing better.

I know you want to be with your friends, but in order to find your unique talents, choose an activity that YOU are interested in. Are you obsessed with old movies but none of your gals are? See if you can find a film class to take or start recording your own documentary with your parent's video cam. Do you get straight A's in science? Maybe there's a science club, or take all that earth science info and start somethin'...like your own recycling program at your school.

Plenty of people get discouraged when they’re not immediately the very best at something. Sure, everyone would LOVE to immediately be number one, but do you think that Shawn Johnson woke up one morning being able to whip out a double back handspring?! No way! It takes a lot of time, hard work and effort to be great at whatever activity you choose to do. It may look like you’re alone, but so many people share these frustrations. Don’t give up! Once you find your niche, you'll have so much fun that you won't even realize how hard you're working to achieve your goals. And just remember, a positive mantra and practice, practice, PRACTICE are always the keys to success. You can do it!
