Competitive Chicas

I feel as though I can’t trust my BFF. Every day it seems as though we grow apart more and more. Each time we hang out, it feels like it's all a competition between us like when we draw, it's a competition to see who can draw better; when we sled, the competition is who can steer the sled better.

I really feel like my best friend and I aren’t best friends anymore. I miss hanging out with her. She has a friend (who is really mean to me) that sleeps over every Friday and they always go on walks the next morning past my house and I get so jealous of her friend. I feel like her friend is replacing me. What should I do to get my friend back? I am feeling hopeless.

Hey Bubblegum,

This is a tough situation. Jealousy is ugly, especially when friends are involved. Everything doesn’t have to be a competition. The two of you simply can’t be the best at everything. Both of you have your own special qualities, skills, strengths and weaknesses.

You may be an excellent painter and your friend may be a better dancer. But that’s cool because that’s what make the two of you unique! Instead of competing to see who’s better at one activity, celebrate your differences! You can learn from each other and feel more comfortable around each other.

Try talking to your friend to let her know how much you miss her and the way your friendship used to be. You could say, “I just really want us to be friends and put this whole thing behind us.” Chances are, she probably feels the same way.

Lots of love,
L’Oreal
