American Idol Recap: The Silver Screen

American Idol’s movie themed night gave the contestants a chance to select big screen songs. The idols were guided by the bubbly, energetic Quentin Tarantino who gave them helpful performance tips. To make sure they wouldn’t go over time (although they totally did) only 2 judges spoke during each performance, which was def unfortunate being that I wouldn’t get to hear all of Simon’s snide remarks—oh how I love them.
Up first was Allison Irahetta singing Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing”.  Allison changed up the tempo of the song and gave it a unique edge that captured the audience, as well as the judges. Her rocker voice was powerful and Simon even compared her performance to a hot, spicy barbeque sauce (yum!), adding that she is the only hope for the girls in the competition. Guess that means Lil better watch out. A
Anoop Desai was second singing “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You”. He was full of passion and fire while his vocals sounded right on cue. Randy was for sure feeling this performance and thought that Anoop Dawg was in the “zone and rockin’ the house.” Kara also liked the soul he added to the song and so did I! A-
Adam Lambert went third singing “Born To Be Wild”. Wow, what an energetic performance! Adam danced from corner to corner, singing (and screaming) his little heart out. He seemed to have a blast and the audience def got sucked into the rock show he put on. Paula called Adam one of the bravest contestants on the show and Simon thought that his vocals sounded incredible. Although Simon added that it reminded him of the Rocky Horror Musical, he was full of compliments. A
Next was Matt Giraud singing “Have You Ever Really Love A Woman?” This was not one of Matt’s better performances and the judges thought that it fell down in a lot of places. While I did find Matt to be emotionally connected to the song, another selection could have def served to his advantage. B
Danny Gokey went next singing Lionel Richie’s “Endless Love”. Accompanied by a harp player, Danny held his own. His raspy vocals sounded strong, but I didn’t think it was one of his best performances. The ending was better than the beginning, though Simon said he was slightly disappointed and bored overall. One thing that did come through was Danny’s strong connection to the song. B+
Kris Allen followed singing “Falling Slowly” from the movie Once and quite frankly once was totally enough for me. This was one of my least fave performances of the night and it left me feeling bored. I wasn’t crazy about the song choice and neither was Randy who thought the song was too obscure. Kara, on the other hand, thought that it was one of Kris’ best moments. B-
Lil Rounds closed the show singing “The Rose”. She gave the song a gospel twist, but it def wasn’t enough to win me over. The chorus sounded good, but the rest wasn’t anything special. Simon felt that Lil isn’t the artist they thought they found in the beginning and she seemed to disagree. Either way I think she may be in jeopardy of being in the bottom 3. B-

As a whole, the idols definitely did not overly impress me with their movie song selections. Some were good and those who weren’t stood out. Due to the fact that she’s been lacking that special artist quality lately, I think Lil Rounds should be the one to go.  What do you girlies think? Tell us your thoughts!
