BUSTED! Sun Smarts

Don’t get burned! May is Skin Cancer Awareness month, so it’s time to be sun smart. The best way to save your skin now? Dousing yourself in sunscreen each and every day (and reapply every couple hours). Don’t think YOU need SPF? Think again, ‘cause we’ve busted every excuse in the book, babe.

Excuse: “I can never remember to put sunscreen on!”

Busted!
Keep your sunscreen in a place where you’ll always see it, like right by your toothbrush. Get in the habit of slathering it on every single day, rain or shine. Plus, keep some in your tote, backpack or locker (or all three!) so you’ll remember to reapply.

Excuse: “I’m just gonna sweat it off anyway!”

Busted!
Not if ya get a sweat-proof sunscreen. Look for sport-specific formulas and wear sunglasses and a hat to add extra protection.

Excuse: “I always forget to put it on, and then it’s too late.”

Busted!
You should apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outside. But if you keep some in your bag, you’ll be set to apply as soon as you remember. So do it stat.

Excuse: “But it’s soo greasy! I hate the feeling of sunscreen.”

Busted!
Some of our fave new formulas are totally grease-free. Scope out sunscreens that say “dry touch” on the bottle. You’ll get loads of SPF (15 or higher, please), without all the ick.

Excuse: “My skin tans, so I don’t need it.”

Busted! A tan is still damage so you’re not off the hook, either. You need sunscreen every day, not just when you’re at the beach.

5 more easy SPF reminders:

*Set an alarm on your cell phone. When it goes off, apply!
*Swap your normal moisturizer for one with SPF. It’s a simple upgrade.

*Don’t think that makeup with SPF will cut it—you still need plenty of the real stuff.
*Play a sport? See if your coach (or the team parents) can add SPF to the med kit or supply list. That way, there will be enough for everyone at every game.
*Cut a sun shape out of yellow construction paper and tape it to your mirror. Every time you look at it, you’ll remember to cover yourself in sunscreen. Made in the shade!
