National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy

Attention all girls: what are your thoughts on teen pregnancy?

Most of you may think that it could never happen to you. But have you really thought about what you would do when faced with a difficult sexual situation? Our guess is not as much as you should.

That’s why it’s so great that the eighth annual National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is today! The purpose of this day is to get teens to focus on how important it is to avoid “too-early pregnancy and parenthood.” This is crucial because, although the teen birth rate has seen an overall decline of 32% since the 1990’s (declining for 14 years straight), it has started to increase again—5% from 2005 to 2007!

Awareness is one of the most important steps to prevent the teen birth rate from increasing even more. You can visit sites, like StayTeen.org (The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy’s website) and take a quiz about what you would do in different scenarios.

Have loads of questions about sex, but too embarrassed to ask family, friends or teachers? The Birds & Bees Text Line is a staff of health educators who answer your questions via text! Just text your qs to (919) 699-0911 and within 24 hours an adult from the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign will hit you back with answers! For more info, check out appcnc.org/BirdsNBees.html.

So who’s in charge of this whole initiative anyway? The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that started this day “to promote values, behavior and policies that reduce both teen pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy among young adults.”
